Solid fiberglass stringers?

Re: Solid fiberglass stringers?

I didn't know of the "smuggling compartment" rule. Potentially, since much of my boating is done on the Great Lakes and thus between the US and Canada, I could see how this potentially could be a problem...

...but consider that getting into a situation where the USCG starts boring holes into your deck is possible, but really not likely, unless you are smuggling things in those compartments...

Sparing is probably the correct term, but I prefer debating.

You said the C/G doesn't allow hollow stringers and even from the information you supplied to support that claim, the C/G said they have no concern about them being hollow. They're only concerned about spaces that could be used for smuggling, which means it could refer to any modified space in the boat, and if you let them inspect it for free, then its fine.

In new construction there is no rule or regulation at all, so how can you say that hollow stringers aren't allowed.

I challenge anyone that makes a claim or statement that seems questionable or inaccurate. If they can show proof of accuracy, then great, we all learned something, if not, then I hope we prevented false, misleading, inaccurate, misunderstood or just plain wrong information from being spread as a fact on the internet. (or at least on this site)

In this case there is a grain of truth, but it was used as a blanket statement in a misleading way, which wasn?t accurate. We did learn that even having a hidden compartment in your boat that you built (not original) ?could? be an issue. I?m not sure how many small lakes in Tennessee or Missouri have check points looking for hollow stringers though.

If I ever question or dispute something you say, just provide the facts and details to support it and I?ll agree with your position.

I HIGHLY doubt that a boat with hollow stringers or even a hidden compartment on inland lakes are an issue at all. In open waters and lakes where you're crossing international borders, I can see it COULD be a risk/problem.

Re: Solid fiberglass stringers?

solid glass stringers would be a pita to construct....penski board or nida core would be a good rot proof alternative to wood.....but the old tried and true method uasually is good.

and i will say again.......as far as fiberglass/gellcoat. and most new boat construction.......ondarvr is one of the top porofessionals in north america....this is fact.

Ondarvr, I take my hat off to you for choosing your words well and not sounding like you were talking down to or scolding anyone (unlike others). I have read some comments in this thread that sound kind of threatening and feel that there is no need for it on this forum. If a person can not post a comment without sounding mean and nasty then I believe that they should be banned. Also the only title that holds any clout on this forum is the moderator.

Re: Solid fiberglass stringers?

Well since I'm in this thread I might as well ask a question. Would it work if you cut down a pink foam board as your stringer and glass it in just as you would do wood?

Yes and No.

If you use epoxy, yes it will work, polyester will dissolve the foam, so you'll end up with a layer of glass over a puddle of pink goo going that route.

the only way for poly to be used with the pink (or blue ) foam is to wrap the foam with a barrier...like tape or plastic wrap.....even wax paper.

if the poly resin contacts the foam it will eat it.

I already had a puddle of brown goo/dust when I got the boat, so I guess that is not a route I would want to go being that I am using poly.

Re: Solid fiberglass stringers?

I dont know ondarvr.. did you call up your local C/G and ask them ? ( Like I did ? ). or are you again speaking for everyone that wants to mod there boats ?

You say "anyone" here needs to not worry ? are you kidding ??

I do respect you m8 ..seriously..but..please dont give me a reason.. I gave you and other posters my Title..and you still want to spar ?? and now you want to take me out of context ?

Im saying if YOU WANT TO MOD YOUR BOAT..MAKE SURE ITS AS CLOSE TO OEM AS POSSIBLE..

Done..please dont spar with me m8..

YD.

Hello m8s..

I must publicly apologize for seeming/being rude, offensive or somehow aggravating ( and after reading this post again..I do come off that way ). Its not really my way normally.

I was half incorrect/wrong in my first statement of not having hollow stringers. I was recalling something my uncle said way back in my sailing days.

Now then..

If you really wanted some hollow stringers you could make a mold and pop one off :)

A person that can step back and take a self examination of himself and reconize a wrong, and be man enough to admit it & apologize, is OK in my book.

My hat is off to you.

At this point since you have a cavity to fill ......... why not use wood strips and fiberglass resin ...... no foam to melt away.

Bob that was my plan from the begining and still is, I always thought about could it be done & have never seen a post where it has been done that way for stringers. Plus I thought I would change the subject because this thread was start to go the wrong way
