Here in Florida, they get their permit at min 15 and can't take their test until they have driven on the permit for one year. Accompanied all the time and subject to varying levels of curfew during that time. My eldest was busy on exams, etc so didn't pick his permit till he 15?, so was 16? when he passed his test. he learned on my Suburban. But after passing his test, it as Dad I need the car for school and I have after this and after that. His Mom ALWAYS had a reason he couldn't borrow hers! So I bought him a little Saturn SL, 2002 year with 102K on the clock. it has been a gem. The plastic body panels don't rust, it is simple to work on maintain. He drove up to a recent college interview 2700 mile round trip and the car never missed a beat. He gets around 31 mpg, which is rather more than the Suburban gets. the auto insurance is another story, but a 16 year old male is going to crucify your premium whatever car they drive. Ours doubled to around $3500 pa. If he insured himself separately it would be even more frightening for him.
The numbers of young drivers are falling dramatically. I see 2 major reasons for that; One is that they are the Internet Generation, who prefer video gaming to outdoor activities and texting instead of talking to people. They enjoy life in their bedrooms!! The second reason is the auto insurance industry itself, which is essentially pricing itself out of future business. You scare young drivers away from using and insuring cars and you have lost your future auto insurance business.
Just my take on it.

My kids car insurance isn't any more expensive than mine was when I was 16 (about $900 a year for 300K of liability and full coverage on a $4K suv), car insurance is one of the few things that hasn't really gone up much in nearly 30 years.

You say that your premium doubled to $3500 - what did you do to deserve a $1750 yearly premium?

My guess is living in Florida. In 1983, my wife and I moved to Chicago. Talk about sticker shock. I had asked my independent agent in Iowa City about it and he said I should find someone in Chicago because it couldn't be any worse than the number he was coming up with. I don't remember the exact numbers but it was around 8 times what we'd been paying.

what!!! :)

My insurance for my 2005 Lexus GS(worth $6K) with $1Mil coverage and $500/$100 deductibles is $1050/year. Not too bad now that the car has gotten older....as well as me...over 50! :)

Total Premium with Geico is $3800.00. 03 Sub: $745.00, 96 Sebring Vert: $883.00 and 02 Saturn SL2 : $2162.00. Coverage is compre4hensive & business use on mine, pleasure on the other 2. Coverage is 250K/500K personal liability and uninsured $250K/500K. Deductible is $500.00.
Uninsured is a big problem in Florida, not surprising when you see the premiums. But that mind set from the insurers then becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. In 20 year time the one guy who has auto insurance in FL will be paying a heck of an uninsured coverage for the thousands who gave up insuring because of the cost!! Also because we have such a diverse population from all over the world, some of the drivers are not exactly the best in the world and it is not helped by a driving test that is a complete joke (you don't go on the road to take the test, simply drive round the DMV car park!!!
When my son was coming up for taking his test, I spoke with my Broker (at the time) and he did his level best to get me the best coverage. He was really straight & honest and his advice was try Geico and he knew he couldn't better their quote. He is getting any benefit he is entitled to, such as Good Student Very High GPA. He went on the local Sheriff's/State Drivers Course which in some States is counted toward reducing the premium. In Florida it doesn't count. But the experience he got was tremendous. Watching him handle the Sub in braking tests on the skidpan and doing a 360 in the Suburban was something else. His younger brother is 15 today, so we off to DMV for his permit in the next day or so and he'll be following in his brothers footsteps.

Don't blame them. Would you want to ride with those people on the highway?

It is most definitely NOT a test of driving ability for the 21st Century. Most developed countries around the world see driving a vehicle as a skill set that are vital for safety on the road. As a non US citizen, who's been driving on US roads for 15 years and on UK roads for over 35 years, I would honestly say there is need for change here and better education for drivers of all ages, but especially the younger ones. Proof of that is the low level of accidents that CDL drivers have. It's all about driver education. I would much prefer to see our youth grow into seniors and not have their lives cut short, as so many unfortunately do.
I have no worries about my 2 son's on the road, it's all the other drivers I worry about.
