Interesting, do the cops pull over every car they see with teens in it? Just curious if such laws are even remotely enforceable as it seems we see a lot of car accidents killing multiple teens in CA.
Supposedly, it has been helping.

got more restrictive in 2006. Not sure when the original restrictions went in. California is close to one of the best states in 16-17 year old driver deaths.

...yeah those 24's are a bit of an acquired taste...sort of like the 'donk' trend :lol:
..... if that ends up being his style and his demographics choice.....it is what it is, so be it, best to just help out.
Regardless, those cars are great transportation and very inexpensive to pick up. The imports are great cars but they are usually a bit more coin to buy, unlike the big American iron.
Personally I think those big 4 door sedans are some of the very best value out there....so long as you aren't commuting too far LOL...on the other hand regarding gas mileage as a very distinct excessive cost of ownership argument.... is a bit overplayed and not quite the massive drain its made out to be.
As I said to a few of my automotive buddies...buying a new car (to the tune of $15-$25k) because it gets better mileage....is a lot like buying an $800,000 house because it has a more cost efficient furnace and a/c system and then thinking that you are saving money....LOL.;)

BP:)
Yup, like getting rid of my 99 5.7 Yukon w/ only 121K on it, runs perfect and 15-16 mpg, not spending 15K plus on newer model for better mpg

If you know, has it in fact worked and reduced accidents and fatalities?
It was enacted in TN in 2001. I don't know how effective it's been. Supposedly it has helped, but I don't know details.

He should be fine with your rules, the fix thing will happen on it's own and I'm sure you will enforce it too. I like the idea, but what's weird is as a kid, all I wanted was my own vehicle, independence and all that I guess. Today's young have a different view, seems he has little interest in the car? and sport are his thing. That's good IMO, but he will need the skills you want him to learn too. I think.

And my first car was a 66 Mustang for $35.00, we towed it home, rust bucket deluxe.

Fairly enforceable, at least in TN. We have a similar type of graduated system here. I doubt they always get pulled over, but they do at least sometimes.

Same type of system in MN. Didn't exist when my 23 year old got his license but did when the 17 year old got his. Great idea, keeps the in car distractions down and cuts down on the deaths when a new driver really screws up.

After more than 6 years of trying, Minnesotans For Safe Driving’s main legislative initiative finally passed the Legislature and this law became effective August 1, 2008. The first parts of the GDL system have been in law since 1999, but the further safety measures for teens with new provisional licenses were the most controversial and took longer to pass. These new safety measures are affecting newly licensed drivers ages 16 and 17. They will have new restrictions to their driving for the first year of driving on their provisional license. During the first six months the new licensee cannot operate a vehicle carrying more than one passenger under age 20 who is not a member of their immediate family. That increases to allow three non- family passengers for the second 6 months.
Also during the first six months of provisional licensure, a person under age 18 is prohibited from driving between midnight and 5 a.m., except when the driver is driving due to a job; or the driver is accompanied by a licensed driver or state identification card holder who is at least age 25.

My '07 Vic. has been a good car. I love the traction control on it - best TC I have ever had and this winter has been all ice. Mine's quite decent on fuel with the LX highway rear axle, and it takes the cheaper gas.
They aren't all that safe though statistically. In a T-bone, they actually fair quite poorly. Law enforcement unions have complained about that for a decade. Also, the handling on mine never felt right until I took the stock 16's off and put 18" Mustang GT wheels.

Would love to see pics of it!! :)

Almost a Bulletproof car.

They go 100k in "Kind" Police use, find a second home in Taxi (another "kind"use).

400 K is not unheard of. Seen it.

Mine has 75,000 miles on it. It gets 15/20 mpg- that sort of thing.

you'd think, but the truth is- people drive as idiotic as they do in front of any car. I used to wonder why police didn't use more unmarked vehicles. Now I know - they don't need to.
You should see people tailgate me like there's no tomorrow.

The deal my kids get is that I buy the first car at 16 and they pay for insurance and gas. They can have any type of first car they want as long as it is a Jeep made on or around the year they were born. Typically I buy a fixer upper when they are 15 and I take care of any repairs as long as they help if I ask - mainly because I like working on cars that I don't have to drive to work ;)

So far it has been a
1990 Comanche for the #1 son - long gone, he is 23 now and bought himself a much nicer car
1998 Grand Cherokee for the #2 son
1997 Wrangler I'm finishing up for my daughter who turns 16 in May

my Jeep Wrangler was born many years after me, but we think that is an awesome idea.
