smell gas at low speed

just bought 1983 evinrude 70 hp i had it out today it seemed to use alot of fuel noticed strong gas smell at low speed and at idell what could cause this

The engine is running rich. Might be a stuck needle in the carb...or the Jetting is wrong for the area that you live in.<br /><br />TMD
