OK I'm following the manual, holding 'MODE' and '+' but not getting into CAL1, get to the time on the speedo but no further, what am I doing wrong?

Just in case anyone else has this:
on smartcraft guages with 'VDO' on them you hold '+' & '-' then switch the key on, then hold down 'MODE' for 2 seconds to enter calibration settings.
