Smart Tabs on a Stingray transom (picture)

So, I have a Stingray 195CX on order. Although I haven't even taken possession of it yet, research has convinced me that a set of smart tabs will be a good first add-on. I know the SX series are not recommended on curved transoms, like on the Stingrays, so I will go with the stainless version. My concern is there being sufficient space to mount the pivot brackets (lower part of tab) on the Stingray transom. Look at this picture and reassure me:

That image is of a 185 series transom (18.5 foot model), so I am not even sure if it has the exact same design as the 195's. I just couldn't find a good picture of a 195 transom (and I don't remember from when I checked out the 195 at the dealership) so I'm going to assume worst case scenario, and that the transoms are the same. Is it possible to properly mount a set of smart tabs if my transom looks just like the above one?

Stingray offers a fixed tab as a factory option. If you didn't order it, have your dealer add it to the build, or if the boat is already finished just buy the part as a dealer installed option. (or DIY).

If you have that simple option with no moving parts and nothing to maintain, you won't need anything else.

IMHO, I would run the boat a few times to see how it handles before adding things to the transom. Not the answer to your question, I know.

Yeah, I did see the fixed tabs as an option when I ordered the boat, but I'd honestly rather not pay for something I may have to remove later, especially if they leave holes I have to fill. Most of the comments I've seen regarding the fixed tabs have not been favorable.

Or.......you could ask someone with the same boat.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. Don't want to pay for something only to have to remove it.

I haven't seen those comments so I can't speak to them. I assume the comments you refer to were regarding Stingray specifically, and not generic tabs.

The only knowledge I have re. the topic comes firsthand. We have three Stingrays in the family. IMHO with the ZP hull the tabs should be standard, not an option. In our case, we put them on afterwards because our local dealer didn't recommend them. They ain't coming off now, that's for sure....LOL.

Thats why I posted this thread... trying to draw a 195 owner out of the woodwork ;) Stingray wont give me access to the owner's area of their website (with the forum) until I actually have possession of my boat! drat.

As for my comments on the fixed tabs, I just read a few things saying they did not totally cure the Stingray's signature porpoising issues. Thats my reason for wanting the smart tabs, as well as to minimize bow rise.

I pm'ed one of the smart tabs guys who's here on iboats a link to this thread so maybe he'll chime in, altho his last post was something like six months ago.

Contact Nauticus and discuss it with them, they are very helpful, they will make sure you can do it and if not they will also tell you that. Phone: 800-233-0194. If you can put them on your boat you will like them, they make a world of difference. You can also go to their website and in the installation section they have photos of different installations and how to measure to prepare for installation.

So I emailed Nauticus, and they sent me two pictures of Smart Tabs installations (both SX and ST series) on Stingray 195's. Awesome! I didn't think they could be mounted so far inboard, but looks like I had nothing to be concerned about:

I knew they could help, and I was not sure myself, thought there was room. I know they work either place, outboard is, I think, a little better. Some hull designs, like yours, will not let you go outboard.

They are farther apart on some hulls, but this would really help give the tabs leverage (if they were electric or hydraulic) when you are engaging one manually and not the other to counter the seas/weather/ and boat's attitude.

Since you probably aren't going offshore running into a significant cross wind which might require lowering just one tab, their position on your boat will still control what the bow is doing.
