I did some more work. I removed about 3/4 of the stringer on one side of the boat. I need to do some more grinding to get it completely out. I have added a photo showing that the stringer between the cuddy wall and the first rib actually sat on the cuddy level decking. It was glassed over but it still sat on the decking material with foam under it.

I hope this link works.

I think I see what you mean... the mfgr must have put the cuddy deck into the hull before the stringers... stupid, but it might have saved them some assembly headaches. Do change that :)

It's much more important to have the stringers in solid than the deck, although the deck is structural too. So get the stringer right first, then work out how to make the deck fit.

Re: small job just got really big

Well, I got back from vacation and my work trips. I started gutting the boat again. I got back to the motor mounts. My project just got bigger. The top of the mounts look ok but the bottom near the hull are rotted. My project just got bigger.

I did not search for motor mount replacement yet. Can I replace one at a time and not pull the motor?

Thanks
John

jif,

Have you checked the transom yet. If it needs replaced, then you'll have to pull the motor anyway and the replacing of the motor mounts one at a time would be moot.

I'm not sure if that can be done as the whole of my resto experience is in the outboard arena.

BTW, How bout them PENS!

"it started with a soft spot on the floor....." Those of us who have been there and done that, know the feeling well, you keep finding rotted wood, removing rotted wood, figuring out how to rebuild various areas, and while your are at it, checking the transom makes all the sense in the world. If you've got that much into it, might as well make it as safe as you can, you'll wind up with something much better than any older boat you could have found, unless you the good fortune to find one stored inside its whole life (not seen much around here!) In many cases your rebuild will be superior to how it was done originally. Good luck and don't give up. Even the all composite newer boats can have problems.

I did find some good news tonight. The rot ended before reaching the transom. Too bad it did not stop before the motor mounts. I have the stringer on one side removed and started the grinding. I will update my pics here soon.

Re: small job just got really big

I just got a quote on having a marine mechanic replace my motor mounts. The quote will be to pull the motor, replace the mounts from the hull up, reinstall the motor. I was quoted 20 hrs of labor for this. Does this seem like a good estimate on labor hours?

I would do this myself but I have no means of pulling the motor.

Thanks

Have them give a quote on pulling, storing, and re-install, after the 4 weeks that you have the boat home, doing the epoxy dance yourself.

Really, 4 weeks on the motor mounts. I guess my boating season is pretty much shot if I just have the stringers out. I found all the rot in March. I have been on the road for work. I have everything I need to put the stringers back in except the time right now. I was hoping to get half a season at least this year.

Just cutting the tops off of my f/g stringers and mounts, and :
digging out the foam and rotten wood (I only did 2 stringers, for 5', and 2 mounts, 8x10", all 6 to 8" tall) took 45 hours. The mounts were a bitc..-laminated wet 3/4 ply.
Another 15 hours to cut mounts from glu-lam, and pour epoxy.
and I had no engine or cap in the way.
My dumbass thought it was a 30 hour job...

Yep, but we will have the same thought in the end;

It's solid; I will never have to do that again.

Then in the back of your mind, this pops up--at least not on this boat.....Argh!

A wise old friend once told me - and I've since proved him absolutely correct - "Finding and replacing rotten wood in a boat is like swallowing a spitoon. There's just no place to stop until it's all gone." My transom replacement has evolved into stringers, deck, seats, storage compartments, rail mounts and on and on. It's a good thing I'm retired.

I understand the constant add ons. Right now it is stringers, motor mounts, carpeting, seats, new hatches, deck lights, possible air horn. The longer the boat sits in the driveway the more that is spent on it.

Wait until you get to my stage of "add-ons".

I just bought a tubing bender, and I already have a tig welder. I'm starting with a hard top, dive ladder comes next and then there's things like an arch, a bow pulpit... :)
