I just bought this little motor and to my surprise I found a little crack on the lower unit that was leaking a little Lube. From the dent on the skeg it looks like it took a good hit. When I bought it it was in a test tank and the wipe down we did was not sufficient to uncover this little detail. The LU lube looked good. I would not have found it if it wasn't for the trace amount of Lube.

It is a 64 9.5. On th Lu the case splits right at the prop shaft. So essentially the skeg and lower part of the prop shaft housing looks like it can be split. Is it an easy deal to split it at this point or will a bunch of bearing fall out. I am thinking that if I split it I can seal the crack with JB weld on the inside and outside and smooth it over.

It will also allow me to inspect the gears to see what consition they are in. This motor did not spend too much time in teh water so I am hoping there is no water damage to the gears.

I have not yet gotten to the library to get a manual but wanted to get a feeling for this from the experts. If it is a biog deal, I may just seal this from the outside and cross my fingers. The motor is not worth a new or rebuilt LU. I would part it our before that (and probably make some money on it).

If you turn the motor upside down, you can just pop the cap off and things will stay pretty well in place. Before you JB it, boil the cap in strong dishwater, preferably with Dawn. Laundry detergent works too. Then you'll have a better chance of it sticking. Seal the crack inside and out.

Thanks, that is pretty much what I wanted to do. There is a screw on the lower case, not the fill screw, I assume it is a shift linkage screw. Can I just undo that??

If I can get it off, I may just get it welded instead.

In any case I will consult a manual before I do this..

Yeah, that's for the shift-fork pivot. It'll have to come out too. Getting it back in is a bit of a pain, but there's no way around it.
If you can get some new spagetti and O-ring for the lower unit from your local dealer, replace them too. You may get lucky and be able to reseal it with the old spagetti and some sealant, but it's much easier with a new seal.
Should only cost a couple bones, and probably will save you some grief later.

Yes, that has all you need and a whole lot more. That kit includes new driveshaft, propshaft and shift shaft seals. If you wanted to, you could replace them all but I really don't see the point if they're not leaking.
You could just get 18-2534 (OMC 309044) Spagetti and 18-7120 (OMC 307853) O-ring. The local dealer probably has them in hand.

Re: Small crack on Lower unit Evin 9.5

i have JB welded cracks in the lower units before i never had to take them apart just get a die grinder and v out the crack alittle dont go too much just enough to get some fill area and to rough it up so u get it to stick. use carb cleaner and a blow gun to clean out the crack then use jb weld with your finger and smear it into the crack after that use the rest to fill the v where u ground it out after it drys just file or sand it down and paint. make sure u give it 24 hours to dry before turning the engine back over. if u do it this way u wont have to take anything apart and mess with the seals. sealing the lower unit of a 9.5 can be alittle tricky because of the spigetti seals they use.

I am going to try to seal it externally first. I will look at it again after I get some time in the water and if necessary will pull it apart to fix it better. I will be pulling this out of the water every weekend so there will be ample time to inspect it.

Will the JB Weld add any structural support or will it crack if struck again? I have very little experience with JB weld.

follow my instructions with v-ing out the crack so u have more bonding area the roughness of the grinding will help the JB weld stick better. how big is the crack anything any bigger then 2 inches might need to get welded. i have a few spare keels if u are intrested in 1 drop me a line. thanks

Wayne.. Sent you an e-mail..

The crack starts down the skeg and goes up and around the front to the other side. I couldn't see if it just reach the edge of the skeg or whether it acutally proceeded to the other side. In any case it is a hairline crack and does not appear to be a stress area.
