I just bought this little motor and to my surprise I found a little crack on the lower unit that was leaking a little Lube. From the dent on the skeg it looks like it took a good hit. When I bought it it was in a test tank and the wipe down we did was not sufficient to uncover this little detail. The LU lube looked good. I would not have found it if it wasn't for the trace amount of Lube.

It is a 64 9.5. On th Lu the case splits right at the prop shaft. So essentially the skeg and lower part of the prop shaft housing looks like it can be split. Is it an easy deal to split it at this point or will a bunch of bearing fall out. I am thinking that if I split it I can seal the crack with JB weld on the inside and outside and smooth it over.

It will also allow me to inspect the gears to see what consition they are in. This motor did not spend too much time in teh water so I am hoping there is no water damage to the gears.

I have not yet gotten to the library to get a manual but wanted to get a feeling for this from the experts. If it is a biog deal, I may just seal this from the outside and cross my fingers. The motor is not worth a new or rebuilt LU. I would part it our before that (and probably make some money on it).
