sludged up Yahama remote tank

I just purchased a 1992 Yamaha 130. While doing some preventive maintenance I found sludge in the bottom of the remote oil tank. After cleaning it all up, replacing tubes and straining 3/4's of the oil I am ready to reinstall it. My concern now is the main tank on the engine. The water trap color is black. Is this a sign of sludge? I am thinking of removing the tank, inspecting and cleaning. I hesitate in fear of loosing prime on the oil pump.
Is the gear pump in the remote tank able to reduce the viscosity of any sludge that may go through it to the extent of it passing through the injection pump, after going through the main tank, without plugging it up.
The engine was tested before purchased and did not signal any warning signs. I am just doing preventive maintenance so that I know the condition of my engine.

Thank you in advance of any help.

PS. What a great site. This is my first post.

Re: sludged up Yahama remote tank

Sludge is due to the intrusion of water into the oil tank or possibly a chemical reaction to different brands of oils. That was a common problem before the days of TC-W3 certified lubes.

After flushing out the remote tank, did you replace the filter screen the tank?

You should also drain the engine mounted tank first, then carefully remove the sending unit to clean out the plastic screen and inspect the tank. Install a new seal on the sender and be sure to position the screen correctly on the sending unit. Refer to the service manual for the correct procedure.

Re: sludged up Yahama remote tank

Thanks Capt.

Yes I cleaned the remote tank and replaced the filter and all hoses. The old ones were so hard they had to be cut loose from their connecting points. I double filtered the oil. Once thru a window screen and secondly through a fine mess filter used in the old fashion gas funnels. I plan to use that oil. The motor has been run with it, how old it is I am not sure. I plan on using Yamalube. However, as I think about it now, I don't mix brand of oils in my car, so why in my boat. Confession, money. Just a little personal history on myself, I am 72 and I have asked myself the question several times, "why are you buying a boat? Your 72 years old.

Great on the main tank. I will do as you say. As I mentioned in my original thread I am concerned about loosing prime to the oil injection pump. I will try to tie up the tube dropping to the pump to keep prime.

You mentioned replacing the seal on the sender. What about the water collector?

Thanks for your input.

Their is a difference in oil quality, I have never seen it in a Yamaha, but a problem with merc is a "gellatinous" film that films over the intake screen causing oil transfer problems, I assume it could cause the same problems with Yamahas.

Drain the tank by removing the water collector tubing, and replace it if brittle. You will also find out how good your parts person is as many of the Yamaha electronic parts displays do not show it.
