SLOW mode... What is it??

While reading other people's posts, I've seen SLOW mode mentioned several times usually in conjunction with a heat warning buzzer. My question is, what is SLOW mode and how can I tell if my engine is running in it??

S.L.O.W. stands for Speed Limiting Overheat Warning. When a motor overheats with the S.L.O.W. system the engine RPM's are reduced to avoid any more damage to the powerhead.

I stand to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure SLOW was introduced after 1985.
