How?!?! I have a 50 and I run half throttle and burn that every 5 hours
Assuming your motor's a 2 stroke yer lucky to get that much mpg outa it. The old rules still apply: A 50 hp 2 stroke will consume 5 gph @ wot. Correspondingly your motor probly burns 2 or so gph @ half throttle.

I routinely burn up 14 gal or so in an afternoon. Fuel economy is for wussies. Haul a** & burn gas!

Having spent the better part of my life on sailboats, I'm ready to open the throttle!

Y'know when us kids were growing up my Dad went through a brief 'blow boat' phase? He got better ...

Heh, heh... my son, while growing up sailing the Chesapeake, would oogle every go-fast boat that went by, his eyes would glaze over, straight to dreamville. Sadly, he remains on the dark side to this day.

Re: Slow Down and Just Cruise

I'll warm it a bit, then take to an easy plane for a while. After a bit I'll get the itch to run up high on the planing surface so I'll lay on some speed. I must be getting cheap and old, I usually don't run hard for long. I keep looking at the fuel gauge and thinking how far I can go if I manage my fuel well. Plus when she gets up and rips I generally have to watch my stuff, it seems to jump out of the boat! So I'll usually run just on plane around 2000 to 2500 rpms which gets me 20 to 27 mph. Much below 18 mph the stern begins to squat. I have an almost 1,000 lb motor and drive, 85 pound dog, 100 to 200 pounds of fuel and my bride all behind the center of gravity. So I need a little speed to keep it planing and not digging a hole in the lake. Plus on a low plane I can speed up to skim boat wakes and wind bumps or back down to ease through the big ones.
My boat is a little light for the cubes it packs so if I decide to go too fast things get a little um dramatic or exciting. (Depending on your mood).
This year I redid the carb and the motor is more responsive than it used to be. I find myself giving the gas a hard shot or a full throttle burst sometimes when there is room and it's not too choppy. I LOVE that growl and feeling of acceleration as it takes off.
A powerful engine moving your boat onto a plane and up to speed is one of life's pleasures.

It's a 16ft aluminum with a 30hp. 1200 is only 400 above idle.
Ah I see, I have a 14ft fiberglass and no tach just go by ear. I am going to get **** for that by someone on here lol

When I said slow cruise I was thinking 8 knots at 1400RPM. no bow pointing up or anything like that, just slowly putting through the water like a sail boat under power.

I can't STAND to cruise slow if I'm driving.... bores me to tears (people without A.D.D. can't understand) but if someone else takes the wheel and I can let my mind drift I don't care how slow we go...... love it then

Agreed! (ADD Here:))!

Most of the time I do about 3,000 RPM's which is on plane about 20-22MPH. Good MPG's. A small bowrider like mine rides better out of the water than cruising slow.

Do you have a fuel flow meter? You'd be shocked by how bad your fuel economy is at that speed. It's well above displacement speed for your boat and well under planing speed. Bow high and plowing is even worse, but you are not saving any money going that slowly unless you have nowhere to go and are only cruising for a given amount of time.

You might need to look into that. My friend's 1984 34C cruises at about 18, too- and I know he isn't pushing it beyond the lower 3000's. I expect to see him today and I'll ask for specifics including prop info.

I like 3100-3200 rpm on my boat. That's 23-25 mph for me. Keeps me comfortably on plane without the chop knocking me down. Motors sound good, too. I don't like high speed running as a rule. I enjoy being out there. I'm in no rush.

curious? does he have a generator in the aft portion of the boat?

I like both worlds... cruise at 3500rpm / 46-48mph and then theirs hulling azz at 5300rpm at 68-70mph. Nothing like the sound of a spun up SBC. :D

Hi, 34C- I spoke with my friend Gene yesterday about this. Yes, he does have a genny aft. Right now, he's running 18(?) x 20P props. According to him, they aren't optimum and should be 19P (I recall his having a mishap last year and I think he got a really good deal on the 20's). In any event, his cruising speed is 16-18 mph at 2900-3000 rpm.

Are there any strange vibrations (bent prop blade, prop shaft). Any chance you have a bunch of marine growth on the props/shafts? That'll mess you up good, too.

JoLin, your friends boat runs about the same as mine, pretty standard RPM and speeds.
