Re: Slalom Ski Design

Here's a pic of my "new" 2005 69" HO Triumph with 2006 Animal bindings. I have it lined up with a pair of generic 67" Combo skis and the wooden Cypress Gardens ski which is about 71-72". Just an FYI, the thread size for your HO Triumph is probably the same as mine, so get some 8-32x1/2" screws to secure your bindings. I used the allen-head version with some #8 flat washers. I haven't gotten to take the Triumph for a ski yet, so the binding position is somewhat random at the moment.

I never did give a report on the Triumph did I. Well here goes. I LOVE IT!!! I've been out on it a few times now and I must say it's a great ski. It's way nicer to ski on than the Big Daddy. This thing just begs to be turned. You just have to think "i'm gonna turn now" and it turns. I'm still a terrible skier, but I can already tell that I'm going to progress quite well on this ski. My bro-in-law, who is a fairly experienced skier and about my size, absolutely loved it. I've never seen him turn like he was turnin on the Triumph. Awesome ski :D

What kind of boat speed feels right with the new ski?

We've been skiing right at 30 mph according to my speedo, but 30 mph on my dad's boat seems a bit slow, so I don't know exactly what speed we're going because one or both speedos are wrong. I've been meaning to take my GPS along, but haven't yet. So I'd say 30-32 is about right for now. I think I might be bumping the speed up a bit in the near future though.

Yeah, unfortunately I haven't gotten to take the Triumph out yet, so I have no input yet. I'm hoping to get my boat out of the shop today (new lower shift cable) and break in the engine a few more hours so that I can get on the ski. Water temp is getting lower every day here now!

You better get out there buddy, it'll be too late before you know it. I bet you'll like the Triumph. Bummer on the lower cable, hope they didn't rape ya on the repair, it's such an easy fix. On a mercruiser anyway.

Well, I didn't do the repair myself because I've already removed/reinstalled the outdrive 4 times this year, as well as pulled the engine twice. I was just tired of working on it. That being said, they were only charging $300 to do the job, but apparently it hasn't solved the problem yet.

Well Okie I smell a boat upgrade in your future the way you seem to be loving to ski.
I've never had an outdrive problem on an inboard.

I guess you guys can keep your fancy high priced skies. My wife and I are both in our 70s and ski on a ski that I made. I was 55 before I ever got on a ski. Tried several different skies and couldn't find one that I liked, so I made my own and we like it better than any others we have tried. My wife raised her kids on lake Mead and don't say cowboys don't ski, I was raised in Wyoming and cowboyed all my life

That's pretty cool that yall ski on a homemade ski! Trust me, I wouldn't have bought a high priced ski, but I needed something suitable for my big heavy behind. And I certainly don't know the first thing about building a ski myself. Kudos to the both of you for still skiing in your 70s.

BTW, skiing cowboys are not at all uncommon here in Oklahoma. :)

For those of you convinced that technology has not improved since 1970, here is a link to someone selling a bunch of 40-year old, but new wood skis!

http://www.ski-it-again.com/php/skiitagain.php?topic=Search&postid=13865

...about 50 to 100 Vintage wood waterskis brand new in boxes. Brands such as Burbank Waterski, Ski King, Taperflex and Western. There are some other odds and ends. All Sizes, even kids...

$100 with bindings, $60 blank, $40 unfinished.

Looks like a fun opportunity - even just as a trip down memory lane. Rip it up.
