We live in a little double-wide, so are strongly urged to evacuate for any major storm. Having lived through Charlie and a few other hurricanes, I take such urging seriously.

Went to bed on Sunday night and the disturbance in the southern Gulf was forecast to be a "sloppy mess, maybe a tropical storm" when it reached Florida in a couple days. No worries for us. Yeah, right.

Woke up yesterday morning (Monday) and the forecast had changed to a probable Cat 3 hurricane which would impact the greater Tampa area on Tuesday afternoon! Dang! šŸ˜¬

I got online and searched for hotels at a reasonable price and distance from home. Did that for a couple hours, but no joy. My wife took over while I went to run errands, but she too met with no success. I took over when I got home and finally found a place 5 miles from home, but very expensive and a nonrefundable reservation. Took it anyway.

And here we sit. Very nice place. :sneaky:

Of course, Idalia changed direction and we don't really need to be here. Argh! :cautious:

Weather said it was going to rain hard around 11 today and was sprinkling when we left the house at 830, so we took rain coats. At 11 it was high and dry and stopped sprinkling after we got to our destination.

Just the way it goes

We've seen lightning and some light rain so far. :sneaky:

But, we're really looking forward to breakfast tomorrow morning. They have Continental, a buffet, grab 'n' go and hot breakfast!

Whoo-wee! šŸ˜‹

I live in Savannah. I can't count the number of times we've evacuated, fought traffic, spent money that was for a nice vacation to go out of town for a few days, and then return to find I had a few extra pine cones in my front yard, but there was no real need to leave. So, we decided we weren't going to evacuate any more. Our 3 sons are all grown and gone and it's just the two of us. We bought lanterns, we have a gas stove, I have camping equipment and I bought a generator that is capable of powering most of our house. So we decided we weren't leaving when Matthew headed our way. That was pretty scary!! I had an 80' oak tree fall between my house and my neighbors. Which is right where I park my boat!! Destroyed! Broke the trailer axle in half and made an almost perfect circular hole in the neighbors privacy fence when it shot my wheel, hub and a few inches of axle through his fence and into his back yard!! I have a different boat now, but that really sucked!!
Glad you're safe. It's headed my way now.
I'm not going anywhere, but my boat is in the driveway with no trees anywhere around!

Ouch!

In 2004, with hurricane Charlie, we evacuated 85 miles across the state to a nice motel in Kissimmee. Charlie took a shortcut and went right over us.

On the opposite side of the hotel, he ripped the roof right off! All the folks inside those rooms were okay but ended up having to share rooms with strangers or spend the night in the lobby.
All the trees were either snapped off at 6 feet from the ground or stripped bare.

So, I leave my little home for something stouter.

If I lived in an area high enough not to worry about storm surge, I think I would be tempted to stay put, But in a low lying area I'd be getting out of town. You don't want to underestimate the power of water. Good luck, at least you will be well fed!

We made it through the night. Still dark out, so we can't see anything.

I definitely wouldn't leave our place if we had a concrete home. I chose the location very carefully, but being in a mobile is the deciding factor. Better forecasting would help. :sneaky:

We did. It was all pre-fab food. šŸ¤®
In our area all the restaurant food has gone down hill badly since the pandemic ! We find ourselves rarely eating out anymore, when we used to eat out frequently due to lower quality food and higher costs!!
