Re: Show us your Classic or Unusual Auto

We(my dad) own a 1967 Chevy Impala SS.

Its a sleeper, we still have the stock motor wirh only 19,000 miles on it.

The car is now powered my a 650hp drag raceing motor. It will run a 1/4mile under 7sec's.

Only thing thats not stock is the motor and rearend, it got snaped on the drag strip the first time my dad stomped on it. It was bought for 22,000 with both motors. The orignal motor is under the steps in our bastment, sometime the the near future it will go back in the car and be sold. The car is worth more with the orignal motor.

The prolbem with the car is its not ment to handle the kind of power its got in it. My dad says he had it alittle over 140mph on the highway one night and he had to back off because to much air was getting under the car, it it was not for that it had more in it.
No picts on the computer now, I'll try to get one tomorow. Its a nice looking car, but for a classic I'd rather he get a pretter one, with out a hardtop. This one is black on black with black vinle seats.

We only took it out twice this year, it won 1st in both shows it went to.

I'll get some picts and info on the motor she's got.

BTW,
its never been repainted. We put a clearcoat on her, but not new paint. She looks great, not a single scrach.

Re: Show us your Classic or Unusual Auto

While I have to agree with Ryan on the ever-appearing S-10 (it's just an S-10, same body-style for 10 years now), I think his 1/4 mile stats are out of whack.

An friend of mine has a '71 Road Runner, twin turbo, 426 Hemi rated at 1000 Horsepower, and run's 8.99's at 155 MPH. This is a car that weighs between 500-800 pounds less than your Impala and was built exclusively to run the 1/4 mile drag circuit. To run "under 7 seconds" as you suggest, the car would be going near 200 MPH at the end of the 1/4 mile and would SHATTER all NHRA 1/4 mile records.

I don't doubt for a second that your dad's car is an impressive piece of Detroit pride, but the 1/4 mile times are just impossible... thus Ray's response ;)

Here's what a car that runs under 7 looks like:
Yea Moose, how about 4.50 at 320MPH.
That's what Cruz's ride runs.

The pro stock cars as in Greg Anderson, Warren Johnson and son run the 1/4 mile in 6.8 to 7.0 seconds and they are pro's.
Run right at 200 MPH.

No stock Impala will run that or even an Impala with a big motor.

Re: Show us your Classic or Unusual Auto

After the first 17 years of my life at a drag strip, with all do respect Ryan, the only way that setup would go 6 seconds in a 1/4 mile is if you dropped it from a plane. As spinner said the only naturally aspirated engine cars getting that kind of performance are prostock. All it took for us to hit 6 seconds was a 538c.i. aluminum Kieth Black hemi, 1271 magnesium blower, lenco trans, rear tires that a human being could climb into, hand fabricated chrome moly steel tube chassis, fiberglass body, alcohol in the fuel tank, and b*lls the size of watermellons. I could post a pic, but it would look just like the one Moose did.

Re: Show us your Classic or Unusual Auto

The guy who my dad bought it from raced funny cars like the once pictured.

I thought he said he did around 7 secs in it, but I must have missunderstood.

My dad and I only took it to the track once with a friend. My dad's friend ran 12 in it and my dad ran alittle over 11, when we talked with the seller he said it should be better then that. I'll find out the specs on the motor.

As you can tell I don't know jack about the thing, its sitting down stairs with a flat tire and about a inch of dust on it.

Ryan,

Must be thinking 1/8 (one eighth) mile track times for 7 seconds.

If a 67 Impala SS has about 650 horses and it hooks up perfectly at the starting line, you could expect 1/4 mile times in the high 10s or low 11s.

Ken

Re: Show us your Classic or Unusual Auto

Check out this school:
http://www.shawsheen.tec.ma.us/

Its where I go, we wast no time at all. During shop week its all work and learning all the time, with one 20min lunch every day. During academics we do twice as much work as a non tec highschool does. Homeschooling your son may mean that he'll miss out on alot of the fun things that come with school
Well RyanT one thing they forgot to teach you is that 1/4 mile and a quarter mile are the same thing

Yea, them mountain motors of Darell Alderman and Scott Geoffrion run the mid to upper 6's at 200 mph, but,
give me the ol nitro methane in my eyes and the sound of 6000HP coming to life for these ol ears.

Now that just can't be beat.

They hit the throttle and your insides shake.
wohoooooo :D

I can't get enough of it myself, but hey, that's me.

edit: sorry for getting off topic.

Thanx Flathead, I actually found that same site through a search. It doesn't allow a lot of pics for the free account, but it is fine for posting pics for here...

Re: Show us your Classic or Unusual Auto

Hey Ryan, Hang in there man. I meant no disrespect to your statements about your dad's car. In fact I was getting off topic. This is just one area where I am a little touchy-(drag racing). Spinner, as an old(now) fuel man (filled the nitro at 10) if you aren't used to it it will make any man cry. now we are really off topic, sorry BOOMYAL.

(edit) Spinner, you're right, when you fire the big ones up people don't know up from down. We used to fire up on Wedenesday night to load up on Thursday and there would be multiple police cars in the driveway responding to calls made by people from miles away thinking something was wrong but having no idea what.
