Should I buy 9.9 4 stroke Tomos

Hi,

I'm restoring a 16 foot Naden deep and wide bare tin fishing boat pictured below, and have been keeping an eye out for a motor for it. Today, while shopping for an anchor at the local Canadian Tire, I came across a new non-current Tomos 9.9 four stroke engine for $1000 - seems to be a very good price.

Two questions - First, how will a 9.9 horse run on a 16 foot deep and wide (it's probably rated for a 40hp) motor. I have no interest in speed, it will be used on relatively small lakes, but with 2 adults, I would want to get up on plane. Second question - what do you know about the Tomos brand, and should I buy or let it go?

just from talkin to my uncle, wen he was a kid my grandma and grandpa had a 12 aluminum boat with a 9.9 on it. it didnt go fast but it was powerful enuf to cart around 3 grow adults on small lakes and the even used to bring back good sized trees to use for fire wood while campin. if i had ur boat i would get a bigger motor for it but thats just me. if ur lookin for a motor just to get around the one ur lookin at will b fine. as for the brand im not sure of the quality

Is that 50% off just a sale or is it on clearance? If they are unloading them then perhaps its a good buy. It should get you on plane but it might struggle a bit.
I've never seen a Tomos outboard here in the states and I assume they're aren't many. According to the web they've been around for a while. Can you buy a good used name brand outboard for $1K there in Canada. If so that might be a better buy.

Thinking you will need a minimum of 25 hp for that hull.
Maybe more.

THere is a reason they are selling those motors so cheap.
Will CT get the parts, do the repairs and service work on them for you?

While I have not seen that exact brand, there are many similar brands on the market, it is a Chinese copy of what looks to be a Mercury, some copy Yamahas, some Hondas etc. They look OK to start with, but quality can be poor and parts can be tough to get, plus very few places will work on them. A used Mercury, Yamaha or Honda would be a much better buy.

I see that ob every time I go to bass pro shop and think about buying it. I don't care what anybody says new is better then any used product I don't care if it was used for a day. Ill take a brand new Kia over a used BMW any day (within same price range of around 15k). But I agree with most about buying a jap or American ob. I cheaper out and bought a 15hp force and I regret that purchase every minute I think about it. Yam is crazy expensive I would go for Honda merc or Johnson/ evenrude

Not sure it's Chinese...just quickly googled it and said eastern European;Slovenian?
Not available in the U.S. but Canada and especially overseas, they seem to be common.

Still not to sure about them, like people mentioned I'd check for support...parts,reviews,etc beforw I'd buy one.
Price is real nice though, might be worth a shot.

I have a 16 foot lonestar that looks to be a little smaller than the boat you have pictured as far as width and depth, and the 9.5 hp I have will run about 9-9.5 mph with a couple people in the boat and a whale tail on it. I dont remember what it ran with out the tail, but it was slower. It would plane out, but I really wasn't happy with it and ended up stepping up to an 18 hp.

I believe tomos is a motor rebranded by parsun which is def Chinese.if you look closely the shakespears and coleman too I believe.im going to go to Canadian tire tomorrow and check the blocks for markings.i found a Chinese export site and you,d be amased at the number of motor mfg in china just for outboards.i found kerosene powered outboards and also up to 40 hp diesel outboards.they were rusun I believe.they also have export prices attached ,interesting .you can get a 90hp gas,50:1 motor for a couple of grand and change and the diesels were not to bad either.

Re: Should I buy 9.9 4 stroke Tomos

Watch out for websites that suggest you can get an outboard for absurdly low prices. When I was searching for a 90-115 for my 18' Holiday, I searched online extensively, and came across several sites that gave prices of $4-7k for a brand new Yamaha or Mercury 90-115 four stroke. The price seemed to good to be true, so I did some digging. These websites listed themselves as being North American companies.....but the websites were all registered in Asia. Some more digging amongst internet security companies revealed that these sites were all scams. The sites were super professional, took credit cards online, and looked 'right'. All scams. I monitored them for a few weeks, and they would disappear.....only to be replaced immediately by a new company with a different name, with the same style of website.

I'm watching this Tomos - it still hasn't sold, even at $1k.

pckeen I have a new outboard.the site I was looking at is for exporters .these were all Chinese companys selling Chinese products not offshore dealers in cheap mercs, yammys etc.parsun sold at ctc for a few years and is one of the companys on that site.as a matter of fact look closely at the tomos and you will see parsun.even though their at ctc ive never see one on the water yet .look at the motor beside it ,look familiar?

That makes sense - I ran Tomos on the internet as well and came up with the Parsun name. Coleman and Tomos are both being marketed by Canadian tire.

Tomos was a Yugoslavian company that went out of business around 90 or 91. That thing in the picture is a Chinese multi-name product. Basically, if the engine isn't a Mercury, Evinrude, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda or Nissan/Tohatsu it's a PRC product.
