shifting question

I am looking for troubleshooting advice for my mercruiser I/O. When I go to shift into either forward or reverse there is a tink tink tink noise for a few seconds before it shifts into gear, and there are times when it does not shift. Was wondering whether it was a shift cable issue or a lower unit gear issue.

Re: shifting question

Can't help you much since you didn't tell us what we're working on.
Did you chech the gear lube?
Do you shift into and out of the gears in a rapid movement? You should!!

Re: shifting question

Yes, I did check the gear lube it looked and smelled fine as for seed of shifting it does nt seemed to do anything if I shift fast only when i move the controler slowly does it make that tink grinding noise. Would it make a difference if there was not enough gear lube in the case?

Re: shifting question

the amount of gear lube may or may not make a difference in the shifting, depends on how low it may be, but, the proper amount of gear lube directly affects the life of the upper gears in the drive. Always know that is full to the proper level.
You should also make quick positive movements when shifting. Do not shift in or out of gear slowly.
Other than that we won't be much help until we know what we're working on.

Reminds me of the guy that went to the doctor and said "doc it hurts when I do this", doc says "then don't do that". Seriously you need to shift "briskly" when you put it in gear. Make sure you idle speed is not too high, should be in the 650 RPM range.
