I have a 1973 sea sprite boat with a 1973 johnson 50 hp power shift 2. Model number is 50esl73r. the shifter is stuck in forward position and will not go back into neutral or reverse position. This happened after i changed the lower gear lube. I used a high viscosity 80w-90 which was recommended by the marine shop. I am quite new to boats so do not know what else i can do. any advise will be appreciated.

What ecxactly did the marine shop recommend. I ONLY use BRP/OMC "Hi Vis".

Disconnect the shifter cable under the hood. Will it shift manually?

Your lower unit has a pump in it according to the parts breakdown, are you sure you are supposed to use 80/90 weight? I am sure someone with experience on this lower unit will come along and help out.

If that is a model 50R73R or 50RL73R, it is a hydro-mechanical shift and uses Type "C" gear oil, not 80w-90.

I don't recall exactly. Just unhook both of them.

Guys, you're going down a rabbit hole here. If it is a hydro gearcase, it probably won't shift with 90 weight in it.......

If it is a mechanical shift gearcase sis you take out the pivot screw? That would bugger up the shift.

I didn't think so either but I wanted to make sure nothing really obvious wasn't buggered up. Yopu notice my first comment was: "Hi Vis"

As stated previously. Available at any Johnson/Evinrude dealer.

Go talk to your BRP dealer for the correct answer. Although I believe your engine has a Hydro-Mechanical shifter and most likely uses Type-C oil. Putting 80w90 in it probably gummed everything up as it is too thick for the pump.

"Type C" is for Electro Mechanical. OMC went to Hydro mechanical in 73'. It's been "Hi Vis" since..
