Just got done doing a reseal and a few bearings in my 2004 gen two. Pressure tested it , passed , filled it with lube and laid it on the garage floor for a month, was gonna put it back on the boat this weekend, found lube leaking out of shift shaft seal… which I just replaced.

I bought two seals, so I have a spare. when I did the seal I recall the spring side being out (water side) And that’s the way I reinstalled the new seal. Can anyone confirm it is correct Seal orientation?
additionally there were two seal part number listed for it , one superseding the other, same part number with a 1 at the end. … does none know if this newer part number is different or better? Seal i put in looked the same as the old one

I've never replaced just the seal

Recommended service is to replace the entire cover/seal assembly, 2-4-C grease on the seal lips prior to installing the shaft, gasket sealer on the o rings and bolt threads

I saw the entire cover or bushing too. Did the grease and sealer. Will do it again , get bushing if it doesn’t hold. Hopefully I find a nicked lip when I dissemble it

Just to close this out. The seal was leaking between the metal sleeve and plastic housing. I had put a red permatex gasket maker around it but that’s where it was bubbling … not sure why it didn’t fail the original pressure test, but certainly makes buying the whole p,attic housing with the seal in it a good idea. Was a PITA to get the original out

So leaking between the seal and the bushing? Not sure if the Gen 2 is the same as Gen 1. I absolutely destroyed everything trying to remove on mine, it was in there.

Gen 1 & 2 are completely different setups gen 2 has a plastic housing for shift shaft seal and speedo tube connection .

I bought the seal was leaking between OD and housing. I bought two seals. I used permatex 3 this time instead of red loctite gasket maker. Seems to be holding pressure now , will know in am. In future will buy the whole housing w seal

the seal number is 26-89236 sierra 18-2009
Thanks I have the seals (OEM Merc), Issue is I cannot get them to make a seal in the plastic housing (23-815921A20). They have leaked between the seal OD and the plastic, used permatex #3 and let it set up 8 hrs still bubbled on pressure test.

The old seal was very hard to get out new seals press in with your finger so assume the housing is wallered out . Ordered a new housing that I believe the seal is already in so that should fix it.
