FYI.If your shift is aligned right, it should never rachet. If aligned properly you should have good strong gears.

So when I kill my motor while it is in forward gear it should not rachet? (I think it has been like that since day one)

I called a mechanic and told them i was having problem aligning my shift and explained to them it was racheting in forward and they said it should never rachet if aligned properly.

EVERY Merc I have ever owned or played with has racheted in foward gear!!! It's the way that the older (Prior to 1990) were made. I have no experiance with newer Mercs.
