Hmmm....if you could train a shark to jump and grab (did anyone see the Air Sharks special on Discovery?) anyone on a PWC or a boat that cuts others off, rides to close to another, drives while wasted, etc., that'd be really handy. :)

Navigator, you definitely started something. THAT WAS A GREAT IDEA !!! Now if somebody can find a way to make sharks eat PWCers and survive in fresh water up here in Minnesota....I can guarantee a good business. That's exactly what we need up here :D with the adding of waterskiers also...This way we won't feel useless helping endangered species from the seas....

rwise -- Good Gracious! Is that an altered image? If not, sure like the story behind it!!!

yensid and ODDD1, I saw the Air Sharks program on discovery, also -- WOW -- that was awesome! Both the shark AND the seal behaviors were very impressive. That guy on the whale carcass.... I don't know WHAT to think about THAT!!! He must have a magic bubble...

-anne :)

anne
It came in an e-mail at work with no explanation, the person that sent it to me knows that I fish for big cats. I have no idea if it was altered, if I had to guess I would say it has. But who knows!

Richard

Re: sharks s. Florida

Born in Miami 36 yrs ago and my Dad gave me a 13 ft Boston Whaler at 12 and I started using his SeaCraft at 16. My Dad's motto was if I was on the water, then I wasnt on the street everytime my mother would complain about the gas bills. I probably have gone out diving at least an EASY 50 - 150 times per year ever since, many, many trips. I spent two years doing commercial spearfishing in Key largo before I was unlucky enough to get into grad school. I have seen hundreds of sharks, had them hanging around as I swam back to the boat with my catch stuffed in my shorts so it couldnt be seen. I was a stupid 17-18yr old and bought a 44 magnum Bang stick and used to chase them and they always would stay just far enuf away. I managed to spear a few around 6-8 feet probably reef sharks but all that did was lose my spear. Only twice was I scared and that was when I saw a pair of 10 ft plus hammerheads when I was diving with my Dad, I thought my Dad looked so helpless next to these sharks and I was more worried they would eat him. The other was two weeks ago I was checking a pile of 16 re-called Ford Expedition tires (How did they get out there?)out on the grassy plain in about 10 feet of murky water, I dont like murky water. We had baited these tires the day before with a pile of dolphin (mahi mahi) heads and were hoping for lobster. Just as I was coming up from the tires I literally was 3-5 feet away face to face with another large Hammerhead. I kicked at him and he screamed off the other way, Obviously he was just curious because if he wanted me he would have had me. I walked across the water to the boat and my wife has been refusing to allow me to go back there, she saw the shark from the boat. I think of all the times I have stopped on this little lobster honey hole alone on my way in from fishing and to be honest, I think my days of free diving alone are over, or at least until our freezer runs out of lobster. All in all I would rather dive on a 40-100ft deep reef with clear water and a shark around that you can keep your eye on then 2-10 ft of murky water even if there was no shark around. I dont like not seeing my surroundings. Being this active all my life I can remember many many reported shark attacks all throughout the south and they almost always occurr on the beach, the Bahamas have always had there fill, but you only heard about them from other divers or the doctors who treated these wounds, not channel seven news or even worse CNN........Mark

These are interesting stories, but you guys are getting as bad as the media!! These are wild critters, acting normally in their normal environment. If we invade that environment there may be conflict or even predation. End of story. Leave it be!

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Just so everyone knows.....the story of the uncle shark fishing is completely bogus. There is a front page feature in the Pensacola News Journal this morning focused on how these hoaxes are born and continue on the internet. The uncle is a true hero

Re: sharks s. Florida

I can't treat this current focus on sharks in Floridian waters as normal,or natural. Sure, sharks are normal out there. What is odd is the numbers. It is not natural. The more we mess with the natural forces, such as artificialy protecting one species over the concerns of the rest of the species, we doom one or more of the others.
It stands to reason, that if we have more sharks, we did something to cause it, or something in nature itself has drasticly changed. If we take an objective look at recent changes in the ecosystem of Florida's waters, we see man messing with manatees, and normal man-induced taking of sharks.
It really is as simple as that. Protect them outta existance, right?

I grew up in St.Augustine Fl. We used to surf all day long with small sharks chasing mullet around us. There were very few problems then (10+ yrs ago). I think the problem has to do with the imbalance in available bait fish, more people in the water and the hole in the ozone layer. ;) ...Ken

Re: sharks s. Florida

The mako, the most aggresive and graceful maneater in the ocean. I've had them hooked and jumping 20 feet in the air and had one jump over the transom of my 20 footer 3 years ago. I live in RI and do plenty of sharking and have even caught them in Narragansett Bay and the sakonett river. People dont realize they are possibly swimming with the sharks everyday they are at the beach. I've caught many sharks in close to shore, off Newport and on the reefs. There's a beautiful beach on Block Island with plenty of swimmers. Block Island is about 7 miles from the mainland and I do serious shark fishing just offshore from the Island. Hell there's even a place called Sharks Ledge about a mile from the Island. Fortunately I can't recall a shark attack here in years but it could happen. Who can explain nature and why in Florida the sharks are attacking people?
