Machine is a Singer 201-2 and the thread would be used to make a convertible top out of Sunbrella marine fabric. I can't justify $100 plus just for thread. What are my options for a good polyester UV resistant V69? V92 thread? I will probably go with a size 18 needle with basting tape. Thread and fabric color will be a dark red. The reason for mentioning color is some thread is only available in black or white.

As always, T.I.A.

Sailrite is where I plan on getting the fabric and basting tape from.

Well, that great !
They also sell gads of thread. If you don't want the lifetime thread, they can tell you what altertenatives you can consider ..... and why.
If the Grants can't help you ........... good luck.

In most Cases, you do get what you pay for... How much more expensive is this Thread versus the next step down? If the better Thread lasts twice as long, the extra money spent now, will certainly be worth it down the road.

I didn't think I would have any problems sewing six layers of Sunbrella. I've put 30 some layers of worn denim under the foot before I broke the needle. Had to hand assist the flywheel to get it to sew it those last few layers. Won't do that again.

I measured the original tops thread thickness and it looks like its .010 or V69.

I dont intend on cheaping out but $100+ for lifetime thread is a bit much when our boating season is 4-5 months long and the boat is stored under a cover.

Wal mart has upholstery thread in red for 18 needle. Same thread JoAnns recommended when I bought the fabric. I used it on my interior.

My sunbrella cover is red and they used white thread.

The same thread was used to make the Sunbrella cover?

I've been making sheaths for my knives for a couple years now and am just starting the research for a new sewing machine. I'd like to stay in the 1k -2 k ball park and want to be able to sew liner material as well as the finished sheath outer.
Thanks much! sewingempire.com/

You can get new industrial machines for $2300. Used ones in the $600-800 range

I have 2 class 15 machines and use V-69 thread. V-92 is not recommended for a home style sewing machine. I use a #18 jeans needle. i have sewn Sunbrella, Weathermax80, Surlast and Marine vinyl using this combination. My grill covers are 7 years old and still in excellent shape.

Honestly I won’t go anywhere else for material and thread than sailrite. I completed both mooring covers on my Chap with a home type Singer using their products. Their help and tutorials are priceless. I intend on buying their ultra feed machine soon and starting upholstery work as soon as this year’s boating season comes to a close.

I had intended on getting the Sunbrella marine fabric from sailrite but Amazon had a deal on it if you bought 3 yards or more. At $27 a yard I couldn't pass it up. I'll get the thread, binding and possibly the zippers from them.

V92 thread is for most seams. V172 is for top-stitch seams of contrasting color.

shop around. Sunbrella is only $17 / yard thru the high-volume places.
