I have a 1956 Evinrude Fastwin and I want to set up a barrel to test it. My question is, how far up on the lower unit does the water need to go, basically, where is the water intake hole? Also, does anyone know where to find a service manual for this motor?

Waterpump 'bulge' (where the lower unit connection bolts are located) must be completely submerged upon starting your motor. These pumps are not self-priming, and must be dunked to begin pumping water. Ebay has manuals, and other locations.. others will chime in. Good luck!

I usually keep my water level just beneath the exhaust. As stated, keep that pump submerged.

Have it deep enough in the barrel as tho' it was mounted on the boat in the water.
