After running across the bay, slowed down to fish and port engine was making aot of noise. Pulled the cover and had my son crank the engine, first, it would not start, second, noticed the flywheel nut was loose, tighten the nut, but still will not start. My guess is that the timing is off. Please help, how to set the timing? Someone told me i might need to replace the flywheel key, how do i check this?

If the nut was loose, likely the flywheel hit the stator, wrecking havoc on both the flywheel and the stator.

That's a tapered spline, a nylock nut, and torque specs that are hard to meet without spraining something. How in the world did it come loose?

hope it helps
