Re: sell it or keep it?

it need a heliocoil to run agian and the carbs to be cleaned.

You can't truthfully say that's all your motor needs because you don't know exactly what's wrong with it and deep down inside you suspect it's more than a helicoil and carbs cleaned.

Your "new" deck will be pulling away from those old stringers soon, if they haven't already started... so your "new" deck is pretty much worthless and you don't need to be touting the "new" deck as an improvement or a selling point. The new wiring is pretty much worthless given the overall condition of your boat.

You know you did a crummy job on the restoration of your boat and that the motor is probably shot and that's why you want to get rid of it.

Put it on CL for $500 and take whatever the first offer is.

Re: sell it or keep it?

I think your best course of action is to list both the sail boat and the power boat on Craigslist. Put them out there for what you think they are worth, and continue to use them. I am doing the same thing myself. If they sell, start looking for a new one, if they don't use them how you normally would.

A 14' boat with a motor that has some issues, and a decent trailer, might be a $500-600 boat if you find the right buyer.

I have to agree with the above posters here SBL. I've been following your threads, and really pulling for you. A 15 yr old who has an interest in fixing things, outdoor work, something besides video games - that's all good stuff. I even cut you slack on the rebuild as I figured you're just getting your feet wet, give it time and you'd finish the job. But asking what the boat is worth and trying to sell it as better than it is isn't cool. Either sell it for scrap - or keep it, fix the motor, and enjoy it. At a minimum, fix the motor before selling. You'll learn more doing that than dumping and running.

Sounds like your mind has been made up, which is a good thing. I say keep the boat, keep at making it better and continue to enjoy it (them).

stop focusing on your boats as investments or anything of value. They have NO value to anyone except you. but that's important. The pleasure you get out of running a boat you built or restored has no NADA Blue Book Craigslist iBoat value; it's immeasurable. you just can't bottle it and sell it.

Very True!!

Re: sell it or keep it?

SBL, I just read through your "restoration" thread. It appears the boat was put together with no stringers? I sure hope when you go to sell it, you mention this to the potential new owner. He should be checking the transom and floor himself, but stringers are something he would never know about.

Thats kind of a scary thing to think about.

:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

why how much you think i could get for a chrysler with a great trailer and a brand new deck and wiring and a motor that need a little work

OK, I'll take a crack at it....

Closed bow, tri hull, fiberglass, poor shape, ob with major issues, questionable trailer = $100 (because of the NE region premium added)

Closed bow, tri hull, fiberglass, poor shape, ob with major issues, questionable trailer, if they read your rebuild thread = -$100 to haul it away

Edit: With "lil red" spray painted on the hull.

Sorry SBL, but you were warned about a hundred different times, a hundred different ways. That's where your are at man. Bummer.

Re: sell it or keep it?

SBL, I just found your for sale ad online. In an effort to help you out, I think you should have someone proof read the ads before posting them. I'm unsure it matters with lower priced small boats, but writing a good, easy to read ad full of information goes a long way in presenting a product someone may want to purchase.

Not to mention grab some good photos of the boat, if possible.

I hate to get involved but I have to ask if it's listed with a new deck and stringers. I had a similar boat in good shape and we beat the hell out of it because it was cheap and solid. SBL's boat, with it's lack of stringers going in the right direction, would fold right in half if it was treated like we treated ours. Selling it to somebody without them knowing would be more than unfair, it would be downright dangerous. Somebody could seriously get killed. Putting that boat out there as is is just trolling for some poor unsuspecting buyer.

I will post the text from the ad...

Hopefully SBL won't mind, as this is posted on CL and really public info anyway.

"A 1968 chrysler vailant. brand new deck. new wiring. with a 1986 johnson 50hp. and a 18' bunk trailer. the boat is a nice lil boat. a 14'. the problem is with the motor i had it running but i the spark plug need a helilcoil to put i back in to threads on the motor to put the plug in. i had this boat running last week. Fun boat great for some one that wants a cheap boat and just a quick fix to get it going again. this is my out so i can get a sailboat. Also if you have a 18'-25' sailboat with trailer i will trade an maybe through in some cash. price negotiable"

Maybe to enhance the chances for a good sale, SBL should link his restoration thread into the ad!

No, its not better. It's WORSE! Its obvious that you are lost. It doesn't look like you're simply not trying any more.

You need some remedial reading classes. You may not even graduate from High School, much less even get into trade school.

Looking at the CL ad you posted, I doubt anyone would take it seriously. Better hope nobody does. Sell that boat and somebody has an accident, you could put your Mom & Dad in serious financial jeopardy. With your age, they are still legally responsible for you, regardless whose name the boat is in. You could all end up out in the street, not to mention having to live with the knowledge that you hurt somebody!

SBL, "brand new deck"? The plywood that you tore out and let sit outside all winter, which is now covering the "stringers" that you put in. No mention of the transom which "looks good", but had wet wood drilled out of it.

Then you make it sound like all the motor needs is a heli-coil repair for a spark plug; "just a quick fix", when in reality you pulled the plugs to figure out why the motor (which previously had potentially serious mechanical troubles that you ignored) is no longer running.

This sound familliar?;

when i brought it to the dock i slowed it down and if you don't keep the rps high enough it dies out so i use the choke thing. the lever you use when starting and warming up the motor. i use that thinking it's keeping the motor from shuting off

i really don't want to start takeing the motor apart i just put the boat in.

so after a day of tubing anchoring out and hitting bad weather on the way back the motor finally called it quits. i went to start it the next day (saturday) and won't start and was trugaling [Sic] to turn over

$1000 dollars for this gem is the definition of a "Pig-in-a-poke" for an uneducated potential buyer.

SBL, sorry you got bitten when you bought your boat, but passing it on to somebody else in an even worse manner without telling them is negligent. Negligence carries legal implications.

I once flagged a post repeatedly on craigslist that a client of mine placed for an aluminum boat. They had a couple seems split lenghtwise for about 5 feet and did a very temporary fix to make it look good in a very brief sea trial, then posted it as a solid boat in great shape. It's sad when people don't realize or care that they're effecting other people's lives. It's one thing to sell a boat with obvious problems, but anoher altogether to sell it with severe and hidden flaws without disclosure.

Re: sell it or keep it?

His ad reminds me of a typcial question on a bar (law) exam: identify all the legal problems.

Except that those questions did not contain as many grammatical errors as legal problems.

And trading a dead old 14' junk boat for a 25' sailboat? Right. Maybe that free one I saw on CL here that was sitting on the bottom for 3 months.

I think we've done all we can mentoring this young lad and it's time to move on to another project.

Re: sell it or keep it?

no i put brand new fiberglassed plywood in for the deck. I got rid of the old. Just through that CL post out there to see if i get any bites and i did get two already. Also when you sell a boat and put as is on the bill of sale and let them know about the motor and stuff how can you be sued if you say it is as is. I'm not trying to be difucult but you could sell a boat that is about to break in half as is and not get in trouble. I know what you are all saying but this boat is sold. i put the boat through the paces a week ago in 4' waves and 25mph winds with 4 people on board and the boat ran good. i just wanna see what i can get for this boat and if i can get a sailboat.

Re: sell it or keep it?

All e can hope is that a Nigerian scammer makes a good enough buy pitch that SBL falls for it... but after he sees the boat he'll probably send the boat back and want his bleached out bad check for $1000 over the price back.:D
