Dell Latitude E6500 Refurbished Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz, 4GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, DVDRW, 15 Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit at TigerDirect.com

This is a refurbed laptop. I understand that Dell Latitudes are pretty stout. My question here is really about the Win 7 32 bit OS. All of the rest of the specs on this laptop make it pretty hot.

There is a real lack of decent low priced laptops that have Win 7. In contrast, last June, I bought a new Toshiba Satellite laptop with Win 7 64 bit, and a 1.3 ghz AMD CPU and 4 gb of ram (from BestBuy). I paid $309 for it and it is of decent quality and scoots right along in every respect. There just does not seem to be anything comparable out there today. There are plenty of things with Win 8 but I would not touch them with a ten foot pole.

This computer would be for my friend for whom I have been working on his laptop. I sat here in my living room running his LT side by side with my Toshiba AMD and in every respect his is just a total dog, even in sending out email. So It is time to replace it.

He is a real novice and has no temperament for a temperamental, slow or balky computer. He will be using it for only internet and email stuff. I guess we got along real well with only 32 bit OS's for a long time and my primary PC's are still only 32 bit XP's and they work real fine.

What do you think?

Boom,

I am not having any problems with Win 8, and I have fell in love with the 64 bit systems, just so much quicker. My new desktop I just set up is XP, but it is a 64 bit version, I have two laptops running 64 bit Win 7 and my personal laptop is Win 8 64 bit.

That said, based on what you are describing about him, he should be just fine with that machine.

I really really doubt a home computer user will notice 32 bit vs 64 bit performance differences.

The Dell desktop that I am at right now is a 32 bit Windows 7. At work, I have to use a 64 bit machine because of the work I do. Not needed at home.

My laptop is a Mac Book Air and I did install Windows 7 64 bit on that using Bootcamp. I kinda wish I hadn't because a program that I used all the time was not compatible with the 64 bit OS.

I don't think that is a very good deal on an old machine. For <$100 more you can find a MUCH better machine. Just a quick look on Slickdeals and I found this Lenovo?|? Windows 8 is fine. If you hate the new start screen, just get one of the classic start menu replacement programs.

I might be inclined to agree ... 32 bit will run all day long, and the machine will be faster, I don't disagree there at all. And, it may suit home use for years with no issues.

However, software is starting to lean more 64 bit and you may have some capability issues with new stuff in the next couple of years. I'm not nuts about Windows 8, but I do like 7 in 64 bit well enough.

I agree the average user is fine with 32 bit, My wife and work with a lot of large image and video files, so 64 bit makes a big difference.

I ran XP 32 in my current box ( AMD 64 Athlon XIII 445 Rana ) until a few months ago. Going win 7 64 bit was like a new computer..

As far as Win 8. Don't discount it. Win 8 is just Windows 7 with the start screen. Classic shell, start8 and a few others bring back windows 7 functionality.

Dell Latitudes are dirt cheap to get used. Check Ebay, I guarentee you can find an E6500 with a COA and no operating system, for much less ( sold as no os ). get ahold of any OEM windows disc that matches what the system was licensed for and it will install and work with no issue. Even if a COA is not there. Win 7 Pro OEM is in the $100 range

Re: Seeking opinions on a Dell Latitude w/ Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit

For a few dollars more I found this Latitude with Win 7 64 bit.

Dell Latitude E6500 Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 2.8GHz, 4GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.4 Display, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (RB-DELATE6500/2.8C2D) (Off-Lease) at TigerDirect.com

I'll be giving him a few choices later this morning. I finally also found a few new toshiba satellites that still have Win 7 64 bit but they are all disappearing fast. An article I ran across, maybe on the Drudge report, stated the PC sales have fallen dramatically since the advent of Win 8

Yes, sales have fallen, I posted a link to a small blurb I found about it yesterday.

The laptop I am on right now, I bought in Nov, for $300 brand new, with 64 bit windows 8(I am running a classic shell to operate as Win 7) It has 4 gig DDR3 memory, 1 gig HD, HD sound, HD display, 2.1 ghz Pentium dual core, 17.3" screen, USB 2 and 3, HDMI Out, DVD/CD Burner, Web Cam, 300 N wireless, 10/100/1000 network capabilities, etc., it is actually quite a nice computer, it has ran everything I need without a hitch. Like I said, it is cheaper than the refurbs you are looking at.

But one thing, if you are looking at Dell refurbs, you might go directly to Dell and see what they have.

Re: Seeking opinions on a Dell Latitude w/ Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit

I just bought a 32 bit windows 7 machine because of the 32 bit software we currently have. If I went 64 bit I would have had to update a good bit of software, and with several other units running the 32 bit, just didn't want to go to that expense.

so, upgrade software also? If so, the 64 bit would be the way to go ...

We did the software upgrade on some of our software a couple of years ago when I bought my wife a Dell i7, but she also runs 32 bit software on hers with no problems at all. Just because you go with a 64 bit machine, does not mean you can no longer use your 32 bit software.

Keep in mind, these are not "refurbished" laptops you're looking at. They're USED. I had this same laptop sitting on desk for 3+ years and I just got rid of it a few months ago. Core2Duo's are old and those hard drives are tiny. Those are Craigslist quality machines. Latitudes are solid (I do like Dell business lines) but I don't think they're worth that much when $400 gets you any number of brand new models.

Normally off lease refurbished means they deleted the software and reinstalled the operating system and original Dell bloat ware, but most of them are not hardware refurbished.

At the $300-$400 dollar level there are quite a number of nice brand new machines available right now.

64 bit machines run 32 bit software fine.
Its when you run 16 bit software where you have the problems. Not much of that around anymore but I ran into it with some auto OBDII software that wouldn't run on Win7 64.

I would recommend getting a D series Latitude instead of the E series.

My D630 literally has over 1 million miles on it and its hasn’t skipped a beat. My daughter’s e-series had hardware issues right out of the box and it’s literally coming apart at the seams after 6 months. The E-series isn’t Dells best effort at a laptop

Core2Duo's are old and those hard drives are tiny.
230G is tiny?

When your garden variety $300 laptop at Best Buy has a minimum of 320 and most 500, yes it is.

I'm not really at all saying that he shouldn't buy one of these off-lease Dell's. They're good machines, I just wouldn't pay $300 for one.

When I'm bored, I flip laptops for a little extra cash. I don't think I'v ever spent more than $100 on 1. Sometimes I only make $50 or less. Buy No OS, just make sure it has a legible COA. No OS generally knocks $100 off a laptop easy, but with the COA, it's free anyway.

I guess I'm old fashioned. Remember when a 40 Mb drive was as big as they made. I keep my drive clean. Don't watch or store videos or music on computor. I have 8 years of corp. e-mail and all my techincal and sales data and still only use up 40G

Re: Seeking opinions on a Dell Latitude w/ Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit

if you want a good deal try dell web site and look for scatch and dent section (also called dell refurbished) look for laptops that have been returned or miss orders. i have bought at least 6 desk and laptops from this site over the year. As for a the Latitudes there good laptops but they do not play on line games very well and once unplugged from the wall it starts to slow everything down to conserve the battery. The large screen and graphics eats the battery real fast. Its more of a movable pc that can stay on while you find another receptical to plug it in to than a mobile laptop. i use to build pc's now all 5 in the house are dells/allienware as they are good machines for there price.

Re: Seeking opinions on a Dell Latitude w/ Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit

Here is the end result of this quest. I just bought a brand new Toshiba Satellite C855D w/ Win 7 64 bit for 349.85 + 18.95 shipping. The only sad part is that if we had done this in the last quarter of 2012, we probably could have gotten the same item for 249.00 from Office Max or others. I think that the ebay vendor foresaw the issue with Win 8 a bought a number of these to turn them on ebay for a cool $100 profit.

New Toshiba Satellite C855D S5235 AMD Dual Core E1 1200 4 GB 320 GB Laptop | eBay

Still, this was only a few bucks more that I paid for my C655 back in May of 2012, from BestBuy. This might not be the hotrod of LT's but it will certainly serve the needs of my friend in a quick and timely manner. Plus, it has a full 1 year Toshiba warranty.

Thanks for all your help!
