.......if you want a good deal try dell web site and look for scatch and dent section (also called dell refurbished) look for laptops that have been returned or miss orders. .....

Yeah Glenn, I tried that and Dell is out of absolutely anything they have on the shelf with Win 7. That includes new and refurbs. You can still order a new build and specify Win 7, though. The hue and cry against Win 8 is so loud, and new sales are so stagnant, that Dell relented and agreed to still install Win 7.

I would recommend getting a D series Latitude instead of the E series.

No way. While I liked my D series just fine, the E series is superior and more durable in every way. Our work laptops are all E6510, 6520 and 6530's and they are much better than the D620s and 630s that they replaced.

I guess I'm old fashioned. Remember when a 40 Mb drive was as big as they made. I keep my drive clean. Don't watch or store videos or music on computor. I have 8 years of corp. e-mail and all my techincal and sales data and still only use up 40G

Funny, my E6520 has 2 500GB drives and 16GB of ram. I've got a 3rd 500gb sata drive so that I don't run out on the internals ;)

Here is the end result of this quest. I just bought a brand new Toshiba Satellite C855D w/ Win 7 64 bit for 349.85 + 18.95 shipping. The only sad part is that if we had done this in the last quarter of 2012, we probably could have gotten the same item for 249.00 from Office Max or others. I think that the ebay vendor foresaw the issue with Win 8 a bought a number of these to turn them on ebay for a cool $100 profit.

New Toshiba Satellite C855D S5235 AMD Dual Core E1 1200 4 GB 320 GB Laptop | eBay

Still, this was only a few bucks more that I paid for my C655 back in May of 2012, from BestBuy. This might not be the hotrod of LT's but it will certainly serve the needs of my friend in a quick and timely manner. Plus, it has a full 1 year Toshiba warranty.

Thanks for all your help!

See if there is anyway that you can buy an extended warranty. Haven't had any luck at all getting Satellites to stay together for very long.

It is funny, every time Microsoft introduces a new OS, I hear the same thing, there is such a hue and cry against Win X!

I know as soon as I installed the Classic Shell program I see no difference at all between 8 and 7, with the start button they run virtually identical, heck even the backup program included with win 8 is called win 7 restore..

I have the same desktop as I did in Win 7 and have installed all of my programs with no problems, and imported the backup files from my win 7 machine, once I found the shell program it has been a seamless change.

Virtually all of the complaints about win 8 has to do with the desktop, I do believe they made a big mistake going with a touch desktop interface and allowing it to be installed on non-touch machines.

Forgot to add, that said, I am glad you were able to find something that should work for him.
