I did a search and found this. "3M 847 is good for the spaghetti seal on crankcase halves on vintage outboards?" It may be obvious but are they talking about what goes on the flat mating surfaces of the crank case halves of the 1974 4 hp I'm rebuilding?

As follows from another thread
"The 3m 847 is for rubber gaskets and belows. The 518 is flange sealant and the right stuff to use. Don't need much, only about 5-10ml bottle will do any job. Also watch out and check the expiry date. It goes bad fast. "
This will do the job for you.

Re: Sealing crank case halves.

For umpteen years, OMC said to use "Marprox Sealer 1000" on crankcase halves, whether they had a spagetti or not. No longer available, it is now replaced by 3M 847. OMC/BRP part number 776964. Used on crankcases and gearcases. Not saying other products won't work too.

Re: Sealing crank case halves.

3M 847 is also known as Sealer 1000 or Type M over the years. It is what the factory recommends for sealing small engine block halves and for the rubber "spaghetti" seals on larger engine crankcases and on lower units where it is called for. Other types of sealants such as for flanges sometimes contain filler elements which could prevent a crankcase from mating correctly due to the increased bulk of the sealant.

The same applies to later motors that require Gel-Seal on the halves. Other gel-sealant types may contain fillers also.

Agree with above, I use the 847 as that is what is reccomended and works well.

Please dont just put some junk in there because that is what you have in your drawer.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't sure if the use of the word "spaghetti" was referring to an actual gasket or to what the bead of gasket material that you squeezed out of a tube looked like.
