sealing carb plugs

what do you put on threaded brass plugs to seal the threads on merc carbs

I never used anything just the washer. I assume you mean the plugs on the bowl of the carb part? I dont think you want anything that could wear off and get sucked into the carb and plug it up.

Remeber to use a tight fitting flathead that spans the whole plug head.

I used a open end wrench once and junked a bowl because I couldn't get the broken plug end out. Any not to mention the plugs are $20 each :redface:.

I would smear some silicone over the perimeter of the plugs. I think the threads are tapered pipe thread, so they should get tighter as you turn them.

I think he is referring to the brass plugs that seal the places in the carbs where they had to drill and tap the raw casting. On a sidebowl Merc carb, there was a plug on the bottom over where the main nozzle was installed, as well as one over where the idle restrictor tube was installed.
