seahorse starting problem

My CD-16 5.5 seahorse was running but would stall after 5-10 secs.
I have pulled the carb off and cleaned it up put it together and now
have a hard time getting her to fire. Could the first problem be a airflow
problem and the present prob be the slow/fast valve setting after pulling
the carby off. lam in need of a manual so if anyone nows the carb settings
would appreciate it thanks.

OK, so what is the rest of the story? Have you checked the coils? If not, therein probably lies your problem. You are fixing the wrong thing.

Re: seahorse starting problem

Just managed to getting it to run thanks to the carb settings provided.
Although its a bit rough and dies after dropping revs under start mark:rolleyes:
And the last start resulted in a short run before revving up and dieing.
Also noticed black oil around were the clamps are:mad: :confused:Help!!:)

As FR said, have you checked out the coils? If they are the originals, cracked, damaged, they are definately due for a change.

So, you have checked them. Spark don't mean nuttin' without an inspection.

look at the coils thru the inspection plate, discolored, cracked, they will heat up, and fail. do you have spark immediately after it quits. if they have been changed in the last few years, they are probably bad.

1959 Johnson 5.5 hp. Takes a pressure tank not a single line tank unless it has been converted.

Open air spark means nothing. You need to inspect the coils.

The marks on the tiller arm are only a guideline. Not gospel.

Did you set the carb while underway on a boat? The initial settings are only a starting point. You must set it up on a boat. Reving before dying sounds like it ran out of gas. Did you rebuild the carb or just clean the bowl and float needle?

1. Check coils
2. Revisit the carb

Well have just inspected coils and they look fine in fact almost brand new, but that dosent mean they are good right? Is there any other way of testing their ok with out taking them out and as tashasdaddy asked how would i no if its sparking just before dieing? cheers:D

Re: seahorse starting problem

Coils are probably fine then. However, you can't set up the carb without it on a boat. Follow the instructions in the link HighTrim posted and then post back.

Re: seahorse starting problem

You can get it close, but it needs to be under load.

Hey, I haven't taken the boat out yet but I have managed to get her to run
for a bit longer say 30secs. Ive found whilst pumping the primer till it gets firm a bit of gas will leach out from the connection piece and the primer makes a sound
after pumping up:rolleyes:Is that normal.
