Re: Scariest Freshwater Fish I've Ever Seen!

River Monsters is one of my favorite shows... however, as of late, it has gotten way too dramatic. Yes, we get it, some local guy remembers a story where a guy was pulled into the drink by a huge pike....

If he just kept it like it was when it first started - "look at this goddamned big fish I caught!", I would be happy. Stop with the drama :)

The episode mentioned in this post was one of my favorites - seeing the locals throw a party over that devil fish was priceless :)

I'll second that. I never noticed until my wife pointed it out, but the number of times he says: "I could be killed at any moment" multiplies each episode. I'd agree when he's on some rocks on a raging river trying to catch the above fish, but when he's reeling in some sturgeon with no teeth it's a little over the top. I mean, if he can't handle it, let go of the fishing rod.

I can't bear to watch any more of those "monster" type shows. I mean, at some point you actually have to find a monster.

EXACTLY! I think the show is Monster Quest .... cool until you NEVER catch or see a monster. That motion-sensor camaera that MIGHT have gotten an image of the "hairy man" beast just got a picture of a chicken or the family labrador.

It's always the same and I am relegated to believe that, sadly, there are no monsters.

Jeremy Wade's teeth are unfixable from all the tea drinking. :D

What? supporting facts please? Being a LM Bass chaser all of my life, I highly doubted they can "wipe out ALL native fish" in Asia.

Eh, the orientals will get used to it. They are good at adapting. The largemouth will soon become a delicacy. I'm sure with the largemouth's food value it can't be too bad of a problem.

Check this out as it's closer to home. I originally posted this in the secret trout bait thread as I think I can use trout as bait to catch these things.

They are already in US waters somewhat... Hopefully they don't catch over here as they would be impossible to get rid of since they can walk on land

Keep your winky in your bathing suit...

The show "River Monsters" last night just focused on these fish and the determined that they can't really "walk" on land. But yes they can breath air and survive on land for quite a while.

Here is a close up of the mouth of an eleven pound tiger fish from Zimbabwe. They are close relatives of the goliath tiger but only reach thirty pounds or so, I believe the goliath can reach over a hundred pounds. They are wicked fish to catch and pound for pound give one of the best fights I have ever had. A number 5 hook on a good wire trace is the normal set up and a whole fish of about 6 inch is a good bait. They hit the bait fiercely and have been known to pull rods out of the hands of unprepared anglers. If they miss the hook on the strike they normally end up with a free meal as their teeth cut through the bait like a knife through butter.

... I have heard of pike and musky eating baby duck but never heard of a bass doing so. ... I would love to see a bass blows up on a baby duck because it would be a BIG bass. ....

Back in the eighties I rented a movie called "Bigmouth" at blockbuster...a documentary on the life cycle of the largemouth, narrated by none other than Rod Serling (that's right, "submitted for your approval"), featuring actual footage of a huge Florida bass attacking a baby duck. Good movie. I believe you can still buy it on amazon.com.

They used to sell surface lures that looked like baby ducks, I wanted one bad when I was a kid, but my father said they were to expensive.:(

I thought the shows used to be so cool but like you quickly learned that they were never going to see or catch anything exciting and lost interest!

There is also a pretty decent show called Fish Warrior. They guy is a little "off", but it's the same sort of principle as River Monsters where he's going after the big boys. These shows are best viewed after being DVR'd...skip past the dramatic and talky talky and get to the dang fish.
