Nope no hard feelings about you or you comming down and in fact even if I can't meet up and fish with either one of you I would love to sit down with a map and help you out some. I fully understand anyone taking and keeping fish for personal use as I do the same thing from time to time even when visiting a place. My point was (and I guess I make it too strongly but I love the lakes) is that the lakes cannot stand the fishing pressure it gets for much longer w/o those that benifit from it most (all the anglers local and visiting, guides, motels, campgrounds and marinas) realizing all the problems and pressuring those in charge to do something to fix it. And catfish let me know about a week ahead of time and maybe I can get away for a cup of coffee in the morning or a soda in the afternoon (and even if I can't I may bring the wife and kids and stop by on the way elsewhere).

peterfishbuster: where would be a closer place to meet up, harry's or randolphs. without a map i'm thinking harry's. if harry's is closer i will go by boat from randolphs to harry's. but if we meet up we'll have to set a day & approx time, so i'll keep you informed. a buddy of mine is going, he's a good guy, and has never been there.

Catfish you are correct Harry's is the closest place to me and it is a lot closer by land and even a good bit by water. I have not run this past the wife but anytime during the weekend(includes Labor Day) or after about 4:00 on a weekday is best for me. I don't think she has any official plans but last night she said she wanted to go visit her sister in FL before summer got out (you know the pool and beach syndrome). I will talk to her tonight to make sure. In case we don't meet up the first part of the week try fishing about the halfway point near the dam you have two old creek beds that come in, the deep hole around channel marker 22 and the area around marker 34 but more to the right if you are headed towards the I-95 bridge. Also I have caught some good cats in the entrance to the flats around Rocks Pond. These are just some recommendations for the upper lake.

Re: santee cooper "blues"

i tried to find the creek bed the last time there (called little river) it must be a real narrow creek, i couldnt find it so i just focused on the spillway area. marker 22 is in moultrie? 34 is in front of harrys, i like marker 34 caught a couple good ones from there, never have taken my boat to the moultrie side, but have always wanted to try the area where the canal dumps into moultrie. last time out my brother didnt want me going that far in case we had some unforseen engine problems that far from base. i wasnt sure about it myself, since i had just bought and installed the fresh rebuilt evinrude 50 on it. but i am confident now!
have you ever tried the area in front of sixteen island, where the submerged river beds connect? (santee river & little river) if so, is there alot of dangerous stumps in that area? (my prop kinda took a beatin last time) i kinda like to stay within 5min from any island and away from the stumps, in case of bad weather. speaking of bad weather, so you get alot of passing thunder storms in late august?
ps. have fun in florida, and dont forget the poles! ;)

I must have an outdated map because 22 is the deepest hole and 34 is the area where tille river and santee meet. One thing to keep in mind when looking for these creeks and such is the depth change will not be much. Think of it like an old swamp that was flooded (it is an was not logged like the lower lake) you have ditches and creeks that run through but even if they are wide only 2 feet deep but that drop is enough. The upper lake can be drifted but it would be better to try to find fish or at least a spot that should hold fish and tie off to a tree or hold position with your trolling motor. The lower lake is best fished drifting. Don't forget the canal mouth on the lower lake it can be the best fishing area because I feel they hold in the canal during the day and move out into the lake at night feeding on the clams on the flats. As well any deeper water leading to a flat is good. It is hard to pinpoint a specific spot on the lower lake as the fish are more spread out and tend to move around.

Re: santee cooper "blues"

sounds like the Santee-Cooper is getting hammered! i've never fished it, so i can't say much on that river. but you guys might want to consider the Altamaha in GA, i've heard there are some monster flatheads in it, and i think the DNR would like to see the population cut down a bit... just a thought :) (this is based on an article i read a while back) i don't catfish much.
if you would travel across from WV to AL, then S GA couldn't be that much out of your way. i think...

Re: santee cooper "blues"

Catfish, we are not heading to fla but this weekend we got an invite from my aunt and cousin to join them at the beach that weekend. They have some property with a trailer and such on it with room for the camper and asked the wife if we would like to bring the girls for the weekend to play with my cousins kids and do the beach. My uncle will also be there and told me not to bring the boat if we had time we would use his he keeps there. It has been a long time since I have been able to fish with him and even though he will have his son-in-law it will be great to go agian. He is the one person that means the most to me (best man at my wedding) outside the wife, kids and parents and even if we only get away for a couple of hours it would mean a lot to both of us. I would love to have met up with you but for me this is something I would do if I was almost dead. I am sure you understand and let me know if I can be any help before you get down here.

Catfish, I think I ran into you a couple of years ago at Harry's, the wife and I was camped with a pickup camper in the first camping spot down on the waterfront, and we were towing a 20' pontoon. :D :D

Re: santee cooper "blues"

when i go to harrys, i allways get the same spot! the first beach camp site at the end, right in front of a little rocky point, or the spot next to it. i think two years ago i stayed at harrys the last week of may, then i went back i think it was the last week of july.
i'm going again on the 29th of august but i am staying at randolphs this time, because at randolps the rooms are only $40 a night and it comes with a boat slip. come on down, well do some fishin! :D

Re: santee cooper "blues"

Hey guys, what is your bait of choice for the big cats? I have always loved catfishing and just recently bought a boat and I am back at it. I always used fresh checkin livers in the past, but I was wondering if there is something better.

Fished High Rock Lake here is NC a few weeks ago and hauled in 10-15 1 and 2 pounders (I let them all go) and had a blast. I'm going back and want to land a big boy (for me that would be 5+ pounds).

Re: santee cooper "blues"

i like using live creek chubs or suckers, about the 6" size. but when i go to santee i use nothing but herring! i have tried chicken liver, whole bluegill, and cut bluegill, without much success.
you should be able to go to a creek with ultralight and fish with night crawler to get some chubs. they stay alive a long time with a little ice in the water.

What are chubs? Excuse my ignorance, please. What size herring do you use?

Re: santee cooper "blues"

creek chubs are a native type of minnow that infest the creeks, we have them in wv so i'm sure you have them there, go to a creek and try catching some. they are in my opinion the best you can use. the herring i use at santee are called blueback herring and they run about 5 inches long, you probably cant get them where you are at. if you can, get the herring!
