Have the 'powers that be' given reasons for this ban?

Re: san fran gun ban

The law, which was approved by the city Supervisors would: bar residents from keeping guns in their homes or businesses. It would also prohibit the sale, manufacturing and distribution of handguns and ammunition in San Francisco, as well as the transfer of gun licenses.

Barnes said the initiative is a response to San Francisco's skyrocketing homicide rate, as well as other social ills. There have been 86 murders in the city so far this year compared to 70 in all of 2003.

"The hope is twofold, that officers will have an opportunity to interact with folks and if they have a handgun, that will be reason enough to confiscate it," he said. "Second, we know that for even law-abiding folks who own guns, the rates of suicide and mortality are substantially higher. So while just perceived to be a crime thing, we think there is a wide benefit to limiting the number of guns in the city."

If approved by a majority of the city's voters, the law would take effect in January 2006. Residents would have 90 days after that to relinquish their handguns.

Five supervisors on Tuesday submitted the proposed ban directly to the Department of Elections, one more than the minimum needed to get the measure on the ballot without signatures from registered voters. The next election is scheduled for November 2005, although Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has talked about calling a special election before then.

Penalties for violations have not been set, but would be recommended by the mayor in consultation with the police chief, the sheriff and the district attorney, according to language in the measure.

Barnes said that since initiative was crafted with input from the city attorney's office and an outside consultant to avoid potential conflicts with state law, the supervisors were confident it would withstand legal scrutiny.

**********************

This is an excerpt pulled from www.sfgate.com, the local newspapers web site.

It's known as proposition H, and lawsuits opposing it have already been filed (that website states).

They must be using Washington D.C.'s gun ban as a model.... because we all know that no one is murdered in DC!!!

They can take mine... from my cold dead hands!

SanFran-Wacko has cut their own throats.
Now we can step back and watch the criminals have free reign.

How the heck can they believe that taking the guns away will actually work? What morons!

Nobody deserves to be hurt, but in this instance.. I hope the knuckleheads that passed this come face to face with with a thug that has the weapons.

Go ahead and let them try and pull some BS stunt like that here... I can guarantee they would have a civil war on their hands.

What part of "Right to bear arms" do they have a problem with?

H.

I will never understand the Liberal mindset. Take guns from everyone so the only people with guns will be the bad guys, uh sounds good to me.

Just try to come and get mine, today I was just thinking about re-supplying my ammo.

The lessons at Church today were on 72 hour kits and emerengency preparation. I need more 12 guage shells for my defender, I was thinking what shot size I needed to buy. Maybe 1's,

Spud

Not so fast guys. Don't pull out your shivs and bats yet. This is not the first time that San Franwhacko tried this. They did it back in 1982. As it was then it will also be now. A municipality cannot contravene a right that is written into the California State Constitution. That is the basis upon which law suits have been filed and it will be struck down again.

Re: san fran gun ban

i don't really support private gun ownership, but don't want to get into a fight about it. i do ask a question... doesn't every gun start as a legal firearm? if you asked the manufacturers (those that strongly support ownership), they would probably swear that they know where their guns end up, and it's done in a legal, safe way. so when does a gun get into the hands of a criminal? when a private citizen gives it to him, sells it to him, etc, correct? if that private citizen didn't have the means to obtain that gun in the first place, how does the criminal get it? just asking someone else to think this through...

Re: san fran gun ban

while I agree that some people are not smart enough to own a stick of chewing gum, I dont think a gun ban does anything more than redefine the word "criminal" to include those who were previously titled "law abiding" in the cases of those who responsibly owned guns and sheltered them correctly. Changing laws wont change the fact that criminals will still be criminals, responsible gun owners will still be responsible gun owners, and idiots will still be idiots.

Re: san fran gun ban

Manufacturers don't know where the firearm "ends up", however they do know which firearm dealer it was shipped to, and the firearm dealer keeps track of who they sold it to. But subsequent sales and theft are not tracked by most. And no, it isn't the manufacturers fault that a criminal ends up with a firearm.

Matttt, as for "how would the private citizen ever end up with that gun" if it were illegal? I dunno, cocaine and the like are illegal in this country, but there sure seems to be a lot of it around don't you think? If it is illegal, how does it get into the hands of the dealers and users? The criminal element will always find a way to procure the tools and product of their trade, regardless of legality, they simply don't care.

Its all a ploy by the SanFran government to get more money.

No guns = High crime rate
Higher crime rate = "We need more cops"
"We need more cops" = "We need more money"
"We need more money" = What else is new?

Isn't the "right to bear" arms written down somewhere?

How can you enact a law that's counter to the Bill of Rights? Sounds like this one's headed to the court system soon.
