Safe to use indoor/outdoor carpet on boat/trailer?

Lowes has some really cheap indoor/outdoor carpet that looks about what my current carpet looks like. This is for a 33yr old boat so I don't want a high quality carpet. Just something that will last a few more years. For $50 worth of carpet, seems like a good deal to me. The carpet is for outdoor use and has a backer on it. The marine carpet adheasive should work fine.

Also, does anyone have a good source where I can find some bunk carpet by the foot that's in a dark brown color? Something like chocolate brown? THat's a hard color to find!

Thanks!

Trailer bunk carpet is usiually cheap automotive carpet. indoor outdoor polyloefin. As for colors, look at more home improvement stores of auto trim shops or carpet stores for better color seledtions.

If you plan on doing any fishing make sure it is "open loop" carpet,...

Otherwise you'll be cutting hooks out of it and wrecking it,..........

I used the indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot with the Exterior Glue to hold it down and for a total investment of around 60 bucks for both the glue and carpet, i am very pleased with the outcome...I must add that I also used a box of Monel Staples to secure the carpet and that added about 27 bucks for the box, plus I made new PT bunks out of 2 X 6 X 12 's...for a grand total of about $140...

Nice job GT. I did the same to my bunks and sideboards except I used stainless lags to mount them all. I also glued the I/O carpet to the pressure treated 2 x 6 bunks and side boards. I think I used spray adhesive but the boards were still too wet from the P/T process for it to stick.

8 years later, with little use and under cover, the HD/Lowes indoor/outdoor carpet is in rags. The monel staples, however, are still firmly embedded into the hardy pressure treated lumber.

It's a real PITA to try to replace the carpets with the boat still on the trailer. And if you wait to launch your boat, then do the carpet replacement, the wood is once again too wet for the glue to work. It's like you need to find a place to moor your boat for a week, in the heat of summer, to get the job done.

It would sure be nice to find some more durable carpet. Indoor/outdoor is ideal because it more easily folds and conforms to your boards.

I did not glue my bunk carpet and used roofing nails to secure it on the bunks...did not see much point in the adhesive since once it is on there its goo...mine has been on over a year and still looks good...roofing nails are made to withstand the elements

We used inexpensive carpet from Wal Mart on an Alumacraft a few years back. Put new marine plywood floor in and glued and stapled the carpet to it. We had the boat for several years and it looked good when we sold it. I would go ahead and do it. We used left over scraps of carpet from our house to cover the bunks on a trailer for another boat. They have stood up fine for several summers.
