Re: Sad Story - Do not Drink and Boat

30KPH is 34.6 mph.

As knots is defined as nautical miles per hour, you cannot have kPH = knots per hour as that would equal nautical miles per hour per hour - makes no sense unless you want to use a unit of acceleration.

Thanks for pointing out how wrong I am, I really appreciate it. I'm sure if you search through the forums you will find other mistakes I have made.

I apologize to everyone for making mistakes...

Jeez, you got my point, right?

Take it easy Skargo, just calm down, go boating, and everything will be okay! ;)

Actually if you want to correct people, you'd appear less foolish if you had said "As knots ARE defined..." you cannot have "knots IS" as that would be the use of the singular case - makes no sense....blah blah...etc etc....:D

Leave our buddy Skargo alone....! ;)

Re: Sad Story - Do not Drink and Boat

I am OCD so my biggest fear is loss of control; that gives me an automatic cut off point to drinking. I do enjoy having a few now and then, but can't stand the feeling of loss of control. There are too many variables when boating for me to drink even one beer while at the helm. You never know when you might have to move the boat or reset the anchor or help someone who has fallen overboard. I don't belittle anyone who drinks responsibly, but I don't drink at all at the helm or when I have to drive my car. I am usually the designated driver because of my fear. Now if we can just make everyone OCD:D

Anyone can drink responsibly on my boat, I just don't.

I have a buddy that likes to drink on his boat. In fact, he likes to drink a lot on his boat.

He makes life easy, by finding a buddy who he trusts to drive the boat when he does this. Its a very simple process ... he brings a designated driver, hands that person the keys and goes about wiping out a good portion of the local beer mart's Buds.

See, its not too hard to do the right thing!

I don't drink on my boat. I don't allow alcohol on my boat. I get stinking, **** faced, falling down drunk before I get into the boat. :D

Ok, I'm just kidding.

Just stop the bickering and I'll stop making posts like this. ;)

Just because you do not drink, dont preach to the rest of us that do. It isnt illegal until you get over the limit, and most of us are responsible enough to know when to stop.

Wow, I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard that one! Know when to stop, huh? I've never met a drunk driver that thought they were drunk.

That comment is only beat out by the "I only had one beer officer".

I enjoy a beer or mixed drink as much as anybody, but when my boat leaves the dock, I (the captain) don't drink alcohol until it's back tied up at the dock. My guests are free to drink within reason, but not to the point of even giddy. If we're in the "big pond" and something goes wrong, they might need all their wits just to stay alive. If a drunk falls out of your boat and drowns, you are in for a really bad day!

People don't realize that even one beer or drink impacts your reaction time and reflexes, why you want to diminish them is beyond me. Especially on a boat

I know, I know, someone will chime in and say it doesn't affect them because they are big or experienced, whatever

I quit drinking years ago and believe me I loved doing it in my boat.I wised up before anything happened and quit period. The main problem with drinking is knowing when to do it....The ones that do enjoy it and the ones that dont regret it..

Not at all, the sentence was shortened but the full one would read "as the unit of speed measurement known as knots is defined as....". Then it is clear that IS is correct. The unit...is, not the unit....are. It's a common enough mistake, you often hear "The United States are...." - yes, there are plural states but the country is singular.

No problem, but I can only comment on what you ACTUALLY wrote.

If you should have written something else, then I guess you should have written something else.....;)

You have missed the point, again. Knots is a unit of measurement, hence singular. If I were talking about Knots as in bits of rope tied together, that would be plural.

skargo- I enjoy reading your post and respect your right to have an opinion, and it is true a large percentage of boating fatalities are related to intoxicated peopleBUT I have the right to legally enjoy adult beverages at my discretion on board. I have done this for 30+ years. (and I am BIG). A few bad apples always seem to mess it up for those responsible enough to take care of themselves.

I am all for LEO enforcing the laws. The vast majority follow the rules.

Re: Sad Story - Do not Drink and Boat

typical typical typical. One guy mentions alcoholic beverages. Someone has to get all self righteous and say with chest puffed out NEVER ON MY BOAT DAMMIT
which then provokes someone to defend appropriate behavior, such as none for the driver, or legal limits for the driver, whatever, which for some reason inspires the tea-totallers to say EVEN ONE IS A SIN. Then someone has to bring up alchy relatives or dirtball friends. Someone yells about BOOZE and someone replies it's only beer.

None of it is relevent. No one is going to change from one side to the other. The real trouble makers aren't reading this. Give it a rest.

Nobody says just one is a sin. Just pointing out facts, one DOES impair, even if it's slightly. You can't dispute that if you have any intelligence at all.

Not everyone NEEDS alcohol to enjoy life ;)

Re: Sad Story - Do not Drink and Boat

I don't think there is any reason to imply anybody is unintelligent. I don't need alcohol to enjoy life, but I enjoy boating for the relaxation I get from it, which is made even better with a drink or two while anchored or sitting on a beach. Not everyone needs to eat cookies or double cheeseburgers to enjoy life either, but many do.

I think a previous poster said it best, the people that are the problem are not reading this thread on a message forum. We are all here because we enjoy boating and take pride in our boats, we're not a bunch of drunks.

Re: Sad Story - Do not Drink and Boat

I don't know what everyone's problem with legal drinking is. Since .080 BAC or above is legally drunk, it's obvious that you will be perfectly fine and fully in control of your boat while legally operating it with a BAC of .079.
