Re: ?s on setting timing

After setting the timing as described ^^^, I began to wonder if this way of marking timing is accurate. I haver never seen this way of doing it before. Usually the markings are on a tab attached to the timing cover.

I guess what I'm asking is do i need to confirm TDC or is that mark (red arrow) accurate.....

As long as the decal is for that engine, it's fine. I never use them, my timing light has an adjustable advance. All I do is set it to 8? and then line up the 0 mark in the dampner, and the 0 mark on the timing cover. Then I know every thing is right. Then I bring the rpm up to say 3000 rpm and again line up the 0 marks and look at the timing light and see what the total advance is.

Re: ?s on setting timing

Well, I had it out on the water all day yesterday and it ran great. No pinging! Before I changed the timing, all I could get was 4100 rpm. Now I get 4600 rpm, with a 5 blade 19 pitch SS prop, and no pinging. The only thing I noticed was it was a little hard to start between skiers. Would moving it up to 10 BFTDC improve warm starting?

The guy who rebuilt my carb told to advance the timing 5*, from stock, and I would notice a marked improvement in performace.

Any comments.

Thanks....

I have seen modified engines setup by advancing till the valves start to ping a little then backing it off to the point where the stop. That seemed to be the sweet spot for at least some engines.

I don't think you will hurt anythng to try it as long as its not modified to an extreme. The experts here may know more about any long term risks or concerns.

Every engine, stock or not, will have a sweet spot for ignition advance.

What you absolutely do not want is pinging.

You are lucky you heard it and got it fixed.

It will destroy your engine eventually.

If your engine is stock, id stick with the stock setting.

Good work on getting it sorted out! :)
