Hello Iboaters everywhere :)

I have been seeing a lot of Rusto paint threads/posts as of late. So I decided to contact them ( again ) with up to date application and prep and Data on there product.

I am only speaking of there Marine Topside Paint .. nothing more ( no primers or etchings etc. ).

2 links that will get you started on the product ..

1: http://www.rustoleum.com/cbgimages/documents/206999_1103_MA_32oz_Topside_GlossWhite.pdf

This link will give you there PDF file of the application of the product ( The Information on the back side of the label ).

2: http://www.rustoleumibg.com/images/tds/CBG_TDS Marine Paint 1207.pdf

This link will give you a PDF file for there TDS ( Tech Data Sheet ) of how to apply right from there web site.

I Just got off the phone with there Tech Support with many questions .. here are the Q and A's ... ( I will put these In No Order ).

1. Prep .. suggested prep/sand/profile is 120-150 grit for the first application of the Rusto topcoat on Gelcoat. ( not raw glass )

2. Thinning or Reduction ... Mineral Spirits ONLY 5% for rolling and tipping. 10-15% reduction of Acetone or Xylene for spray applications ( depending on the temp ). Acetone for Low temp and Xylene for higher temps.

3. Window for re-coat.. 24 hours or Overnight depending on temp and proper application of the coat ( not too thick or it will not cure correctly ). You MUST sand/prep for the next coat !

4. Recoat .. Must be sanded between coats with 220 grit for proper application.

5. Topcoat/Final coat.. should follow the same 220 grit prep procedure.

6. Window for Final Top Coat to Trailer.. recommended at Least 3 Days for proper cure.

7. Clean/flush gun solvent.. Acetone or Xylene/acetone mix.

8. Sanding/Buffing.. Yes it can be sanded and buffed after a suggested cure time of At Least 2 weeks without fault.

9. Additives.. There are NO additives or curing agents offered or suggested by Rust-Oleum for this product ( This is going to be a touchy subject here ). The AE hardener suggest by some will promote quicker cure times .. but may dilute the product and the final cure of the paint itself.

In closeing .. R.O. tech line is 877-385-8155 .. ask them whatever you want :) ..

Don't forget the Hardener!!!!!! I do not recommend using their Topside paint. I use their industrial oil based enamel and it Does have a hardener for it but only for commercial use not for public. In my talks with their industrial paint division they stated that their paint was basic acrylic enamel and any acrylic enamel hardner could be used with it. Page #10 of my My Flamingo Thread has all the details and formula to use for great results when painting your boat. IMHO their TopSide paint is a waste of time. It should also be noted that Valspar makes basically the same paint for Tractor Restoration and they do make the Valspar Acrylic Enamel Hardener which can be used in the Rustoleum paint.

^^^ That is Correct. For aluminum boats, use Rustoleums Bare Metal Primer AFTER you have used a self etching primer on any bare metal spots.

How about we sticky this one?

If anyone deserves a Sticky for this it would be Woody ( woodonglass ). ..

It is he that made me research this .. but his Hands on Expertise is more than you can get from the Data sheets.

Although I have Never used this product .. the steps that WOG ( woodonglass ) has posted seems to be the some of the Best Info you can get for the finish..

I Dont want this to be Sticky .. if any sticky should be for someone that has more exp. and on hands use..

Yes, yes. Always give credit where credit is due. I just would imagine something along these lines should be... a lot fo people have paint questions that could easily be answered.

Re: Rust-Oleum Marine Paint Application

If i had the money, I would use a more expensive paint personally, but for the size and value of my boat, the 100 buck paint job looks pretty good. Its always "you get what ya pay for," but the question is what can you afford and how happy will you be with the end result. Just don't see a lot of point putting a 500 dollar paint job on a 30 year old 15 footer, unless you were doing a showboat.

Re: Rust-Oleum Marine Paint Application

Any chance you asked them about tiniting the topside paint? I know in WOG's Flamingo thread it was mentioned any acrylic paint can be used to tint the Industrial Oil Based Enamel. Am I correct to assume same goes?

I'd like to get the paint tinted a light gray. About the same gray as the bar surrounding the quick reply window here.

WOG, Why the preference for the Industrial over the Topside? Just curious. I was at Lowe's Last night contemplating them both. The Topside was about $12/Qt and the Industrial was about $8/Qt.

Re: Rust-Oleum Marine Paint Application

The industrial is basically the same paint and it comes with a hardener. They just don't sell it to the public. It is all Acrylic Enamel paint therefore you can use the Artists Acrylic enamel paints for tinting purposes. Use white as your base and use some Medium Gray Artist paint thinned with acetone for tintinng. Start with tablespoons and teaspoons until you get the desired results then increase the forumula. It'll work great.

Re: Rust-Oleum Marine Paint Application

I'm no chemist, but the only differences between the Rustoleum Profession and the Rustoleum TopSide is 2 ingredients. The TopSide paint contains the following (which the Professional does not contain):

Limestone 1317-65-3 15.0 3 mg/m3(Respirable) N.E. 5 mg/m3 (Respirable) N.E.
Xylene 1330-20-7 1.0 100 ppm 150 ppm 100 ppm N.E.

Aside from those two lines, the MSDS are virtually the same between the two.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the Limestone is? The Xylene, I'm guessing, would make it a thinner product than the Professional.

**EDIT**
Is the Professional line (linked from HomeDepot in a previous post) the same as the Industrial that is being discussed? I can't seem to location an actual Industrial line.

Awesome info guys. Thanks. I'll be painting my Starcraft SS soon. This is all very helpful info.

The Link below should have the info you're lookng for about Industrial Rustoleum Paint

http://www.rustoleumibg.com/product.asp?lvl=B&pnv=2&snv=1&bid=1

Limestone 1317-65-3 is basically Calcium Carbonate. From Wikipedia - Calcium carbonate is widely used as an extender in paints,[SUP][7][/SUP] in particular matte emulsion paint where typically 30% by weight of the paint is either chalk or marble.

Re: Rust-Oleum Marine Paint Application

So if they are essentially the same with the only difference being a filler/extender and a thinner could the hardener not be used with the Topside?

Re: Rust-Oleum Marine Paint Application

I used hardener in my paint jobusing Rustoleum Topside, and it came out hard, but I didn't know any different, If i had i would have went with the Rustoleum Protective Enamel, it is easier to find, hell even Wal-Mart has it, and its cheaper. I don't see the point in spending more. It's Kinda like Advil Migraine, same exact formula as Advil but says migraine so costs more!
