So I have a 1972 Johnson 100hp that runs after a GOOD/GREAT Carb cleaning with a bread tie, boiling water and carb cleaner! She seems to run good, but I do have a couple problems that need to be resolved!
*it should be noted that this motor sat idle, indoors for almost 15 yrs!*
1. Motor will only run "good" with half choke, so its def still getting starved for fuel. I believe it just needs to "warm" up though because yesterday (BEFORE the Carb cleaning, it ran without the choke) we also checked to make sure it shifted (which it did) so I figured it would run even better today! Not the case.... As she's overheating and that brings us to....
2. Motor is overheating lol. Obviously impeller and/or water pump assembly!
So this is where my Q's come in!
First, obviously the motor needs to run COOL before I can actually run it again (because she got severely hot on me, quick. Unlike yesterday when it stayed cool the entire time we ran it?!) DOES IT MAKE SINCE THAT THE MOTOR SAT FOR 15 YRS AND THEN AFTER GETTING IT STARTED ONE DAY, THE NEXT THE IMPELLER ISNT FUNCTIONING??? Could the impeller just be "clogged" or anything of that nature? Where exactly does the motor "pee" from? I was under the impression that it just kind of "falls out" a little farther up the lower unit.... Wrong? How hard is the impeller to replace and any info on taking off the lower unit and doing so? I know its alot of questions but ANY TIPS are GREATLY appreciated!
Secondly, the choke thing! I think I can figure this one out on my own, but any input is again appreciated!
I'm just happy to know that all pistons have equal compression, boat has what looks to be GREAT spark and it runs/shifts!!! Now I just wanna get 'er on my boat! It got so hot today, so quick, that something was even smoking!!! But it wasn't wires, I KNOW THAT SMELL! I think its the nasty gunk that's burning! I CANNOT TELL WHAT THIS STUFF IS! Its got the consistentcy of a "glue/gasket maker" after dried?? Just a gooey substance that has leaked from SOMEWHERE (if ur looking at the back of the motor there's wires hooked up to what I would assume is the power pack?) And that seems like ABOUT where its coming from.... Any info on this crap too? I think that is what was smoking, because the smoke didn't have a distinct smell like most burning "things"....
Thanks everyone! Special thanks to Mr. Reeves as well, uve been a tremendous help so far, along with the rest of the boards community!
