Ok running the Boat before going to the lake is not only to check the battery.

I look at the oil pressure, Temp, volts and check Idle RPM,s. This is after I check the Fluids. I also check the water flow coming from the bottom of the Out Drive area.

I do have a Trickle and a Fast Charger BTW.

Thanks for all your comments.

Re: Running Boat on Muffs. Am I rude

I would not use the argument that because nobody has said anything, they don't mind. When we loose power, my neighbor runs his generator ride outside his open garage door. the garage acts like a half-shell/ampitheatre and resonates the generator noise directly at my house. It's very loud and very annoying, however I have not mentioned it to him because he has a wife and three small children and I know he's just trying to keep the house warm and milk cold. I have two neighbors that have flood lights that shine directly into my bedroom. When the lights get shut off the wife and I both sigh in relief, but we don't mention that either.

BTW - Disturbing the peace can be anything that is an unnecessary or unreasonable noise outside of certain time periods. Firing up a harley to get to work when that is your mode of transportation is a bit different than firing up your recreational boat due to insecurities. If you were my neighbor I would not be happy.

Do you start your car 2 hrs before work just to make sure nothing happend to it overnight while you were sleeping too. If the boat was running fine the last time out why would it be any different now after sitting a week or two. A visual inspection and fluid check is one thing but starting at 5:30 am before you leave is a bit much to me. If your batteries are that unreliable or you have a power drain in your system fix the problem or install a battery switch so it can be turned off while not in use. I have a bone stock merc 350 alpha one gen 2 and even at idle its loud. Nothing like rubbing your neighbors face in the fact your going to the lake for a day of fun at 5:30 am just to get their day started off on the right foot. I probably sound like a jerk but its nothing compared to how I would sound at 5:30 on sunday morning.....As a side note you are probably pulling more amps out of your battery then the alt. could replace in only "a few minutes" of running at idle. So you are getting to the lake with a battery that is more discharged than it was before you fired it up.

Re: Running Boat on Muffs. Am I rude

The difference in your boat and your car is that most people don't use their boats EVERY DAY. Cars that are driven frequently tend to work much better than those that are only used a time or two per month. Cars are also sealed tightly from the weather, boats are not. Mice and other rodents can chew up wiring while a boat sits for 2-3 weeks. Mice usually don't nest in vehicles driven every day.

Another reason your point is invalid is that if your car doesn't start the next morning, you know something is wrong BEFORE you leave the house! If your boat doesn't start when you get an hour away, it won't let you know it until you're ready to go play. I do the same thing with my jet ski as well. Some two-strokes can be a chore to start cold when there's no fuel in the lines, starting it before you leave ensures you don't run a battery down cranking the engine just trying to get fuel to it.

If my daily commuting car doesn't Start then I have two other Vehicles to choose from to get to work. Wife wouldn't be too happy if I took her mini van into work. So Maybe I should have 3 boats. :D

I agree with those that say to start it the night before. If you were leaving at 8am or 9am I'd wait until the next morning. Not only for extending courtesy to your neighbors but to save time in getting to lake the next morning!

Not any worst the guy across the street blaring his stereo at two in the morning or the guy across the street backing his camper in the drive at
9 pm and running all over your grass!

Yes, it is rude to run a boat on muffs at 5:30 AM in a neighborhood.

If your boat is so unreliable that you have to check it in the morning before you leave home, I suggest you invest in some maintenance and mechanical work to the point where you can be confident that it will start and run reliably.

Noise ordinances are bull in the first place. ............

You may feel that noise ordinances are "bull", but they are still ordinances and enforcable. Your opinion doesn't really count when you have to tell it to a judge.

Its my problem with these insecurities and not a problem with the boat.

Re: Running Boat on Muffs. Am I rude

This thread is funny to me at least.

I briefly had this idea and quickly shot it down. I put myself in their shoes.

No, no I wouldn't want to be woken up at 5:30 in the morning on a weekend. LOL

This isn't a hard one to figure out if you have the slightest bit of respect for your neighbors.

well if the neighbors dont come up and complain then dont complain when they do late night parties or anything that irritates you.if they dont complain then neither can you.

I guess I don't think my boat is that loud. I run it at max a few minutes. I'm a early morning person 4:30am most every day including weekends so this doesn't seem early to me.

There is medication for OCD.

You should try it. Your life and anyone that has to be in contact with you will be all better.

I'm not joking.

You run your boat at MAX on muffs for a few minutes at 5:30am or any time?

Dude take a pill or 3.

I have never hesitated once in firing up 2400 Hp, stinking diesels at 5 AM....Poor guy on the boat next to me sleeping with the hatches open... But thats probably not relative. Before I went grinding on a boat on land yesterday I spoke with the downwind neighbor. He gave me the go ahead, communication is the key here. They don't mind, you feel confident....no worries.

First, AZ - let me commend you for your calm attitude with most of the replies. Some border on the insulting, so kudos to you for not getting bent out of shape.

And....sigh...yeah...I have to agree that a 5:30 fireup in a residential neighbourhood on a weekend with no muffling is a mindblowing intrusion on the general peace of your neighbours.

Try the garbage can suggestion at the very least and see what kind of noise that makes.

Also, try to trust your boat a little more. Didn't notice if you said you've ever been stranded at the ramp but I see from your sig you've got a tried and true, dead simple motor there. I can't imagine it would give you more than a moment or two of grief every decade or so, properly maintained.

A little consideration never hurts. I've been building a large deck in my backyard over the course of a few weekends/evenings and so have had to drive a good coupla thousand screws or so with an impact driver. Fast, but noisy as hell. I never start before 9am, never continue past 7pm and am still planning on dropping off a couple of good bottles to my neighbours on either side as a combined "thanks for the patience, sorry for the noise" gesture when I'm done. Have they complained to date? Nope. Do I know it's intrusive? You betcha.

5:30 sounds pretty early to me. I agree with running it the night before.
