I have raised my son to open doors for the ladies and for elderly gentlemen. I have also told him to say "You're Welcome" in a cheerful voice if they say thank you. I have also shown him how to say "You're Welcom" in a tone of voice that implies the lady or gentleman was a complete clod and did not acknoledge the effort.
