Besides the lazy sellers that leave the cover on when taking a picture, how about the ones that take just one pic, usual of just the interior. Or the ones that tell you everything except what engine/drive. When you call, they don't know what engine, or they say I don't know, but it painted black. Don't forget thru-haul exhaust. But isn't loud

What about the ones who advertise some crappy 25 year old 15' trihull with no motor, floor, interior, or trailer and PROUDLY state that it has been tested and "floats good"

Re: Rosetta Stone (Craigslist translation guide for used boats)

I saw a funny one this morning. In the description it stated that there is no drivers seat because the previous owner was tall????? How tall was this guy. I'm 6'5 and I still need to sit down. Also it said '' as you can see by the pictures, there are no vibrations from the motor'' . Again, ????. Also says it's an inboard/outboard but has a 50 'rude on it. Actually, I'll copy and paste the ad..

White/Blue ,Inboard/outboard,16 ft,1977 Bow rider for sale.Doesn't include driver seat.Previous owner removed it because he was tall and i left it as is.50hp Evinrude,2- 20 litre gas tanks and 2 Deep Cycle Batteries and new Propeller inc.Comes with trailer that has 2 new tires on it. Selling because we have upgraded to newer boat. As you can see from the pics,it runs good,no vibrations while it's oprating. Excellent starter boat. I have personally learned a lot since owning it. I am available while i'm at work Wed.-Sat. after 5p.m. for viewings. I am a taxi driver and would need a 10 minute heads up to meet for a viewing,so please text the number above to the right for viewings ONLY,otherwise ,please inbox any questions

I never realized that you can see how well a boat operates, etc from a picture. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I'm looking for a boat. :D

in tallcanadian's ad it says "I have personally learned a lot since owning it." which means "you are buying the consequences of the mistakes I've made and my learning curve" That could be a long list.

Some terms I have seen...

Tree Haul (This was in the title AND the body, I thought at first the ad was in the wrong category!)
Haul
Hall
Try Haul
Tandamaxel
evenrude
3.0l Vortec Mercruiser engine
Bimi
Bemmy
Bikini

Phrases
"It has the OMC Mercruiser Volvo Penta engine"
"Mercruiser 260 does 65mph (this was a 23 foot Cuddy, engine was totally OEM!)"
"All YOU have to do is_______________ to have a really nice boat..."

Re: Rosetta Stone (Craigslist translation guide for used boats)

"great fishing boat" = interior is ugly enough that fish guts / blood won't matter
"few dings on prop" = I hit rocks all the time
"will buff right out" = oxidized and never been buffed
"great for tubing" = not enough hp to pull a skier
"great starter boat" = within a month you'll want to buy a different boat
"been super reliable" = never needed maintenance
"wife making me sell" = I'd rather blame my wife than tell you what's wrong with it

I agree with the previous comments of people that do not take off the cover of the boat and only post those pictures.

Had one around here for sale where you couldn't see the interior in the pics as it was packed with lawn chairs, tables, kids toys, and leaves. If the boat ever sells, the seller will have to build a shed to store the stuff.

I actually did that to my poor boat once. While I was going through a nasty divorce I packed it full of my stuff while I was moving around. It sure made it easier until I got settled in again.

[insert type of boat here] for sale. Price is FIRM. Too many extras to list, call for details. Pictures upon request. No emails.

^^^^^ Translation: I do not want to sell this boat.

And why would anyone advertise the sale of their boat or anything for that matter, and not put a picture there.

And don't forget the ads that state, ''It just needs________''. I've seen everything from tune up to plugs. If it 'just needs' those little things, why haven't you done this yourself?

I just saw a $500 Bayliner and all it needed was cosmetic TLC. Right. is that another word for Sawzall?

Worse, I saw one today, a cruiser, and every interior picture showed an air freshener hanging there. Every exterior picture had some trash in it, old towel on the floor, etc. Those pictures are indeed worth 1000 words, and tell you all you need to know about the maintenance--and lack thereof.

Re: Rosetta Stone (Craigslist translation guide for used boats)

count the wrong words in this one, posted today--I have not changed a thing except the phone number (so you English majors won't call and give him a hard time):

I have a 23ft three inches, Wellscraft boat, with a full Blimmy top. The motor was redone in 2007. A new blimmy top was put on last summar and a new boot was put on last fall 2011. The boat works well. Ready to take out fishing. It is cold in stripper season with wind and rain. The full top helps keep the wind and rain off of you. I have a short wave radio and a gps fish finder with it. Also I have a water ski and life vest. The boat and trailor and 1993 with all the paper work. It also has bearing buddies on the trailor. The motor is a 5.7 mercruise that was rebuilt is 2007. It has a new captains chair. Oil justed changed and filters. New altenator, and starter. AJLOT OF NEW STUFF. SHE IS READY TO GO. I have the paperwork for all the repairs done on the boat. I alsohave a 1986 F150 ford truck that I can sell. It has a 302 motor and it is 4 wheel drive. It has 96,100 miles on it. Not much to look at but it works to pull the boat. The reason that I am selling the boat5 is I am getting too old to handle it anymore. My phone number is ....

FYI--lots of talk about strippers around here when the striped bass are running. Could get a guy in trouble.

short wave radio? really?

That's my favorite fishing blunder :D I imagine if those people text their wife/girlfriend while out fishing it would go something like this...

Got a couple strippers onboard, having a good time, see you later tonight.

When it's stripper season around here it's plenty warm. And it really heats up when the missus finds out where I've been. :)

Re: Rosetta Stone (Craigslist translation guide for used boats)

Here is a boat that has been on Kijiji for 2 years now. He starts with 4500, goes to 4300, then takes it off. A few days later it's back on again. I'm not sure what the deal is with this guy. I mean besides asking to much for this boat....

geez....cut that guy some slack!! hes probably into for $100 in spray bombs alone, just to pretty it up!! lol
