Re: Rosetta Stone (Craigslist translation guide for used boats)

"low hours" or specifcs like 100 hours on a 12 year old boat (equals 8 hours a year) does not mean a little used gem put in mothballs and kept like new. It's a boat owned by a non-boater, who either neglected it outright, or didn't know enough about them to preserve it. Boats need to be run to stay in shape. or the boat was such a dog that no one in his family, including himself, wanted to mess with it.

Only rarely do you find one that was "in mothballs" and in better shape for it (aka "barn queen" or "barn find.")

"Just needs a tune-up" = I've been working on it for weeks and cannot figure out what is wrong with it.

Ad: Just need a $25 part
Means: Junk part off CL will cost $25, new part will cost $250, repair at shop will cost $1000

Ad: tryhaul
Means: tri-hull

Ad: Trailer alone is worth the price
Means: The boat is worthless

Ad: Old boat for sale (and that's it)
Means: Fire up the truck and get over there ASAP!

The absolutely worst descriptor I have seen to date was the moron referring to an outdrive as a "rudder"!
I'm not kidding. I will find the ad and post it on the "Craigslist/TLC" thread for giggles.

"Engine just had complete rebuild" = maybe a spark plug change at best.

I'd forgotten about all the misspellings.

At one point I told a friend the next time I saw "anchor wench included" I was gonna email and ask for a picture of his wife. :)

Yup, depending on the situation, those anchor wenches can be deal closers.

I love the ones that advertise "New deck just installed" - which means I threw down a sheet of 3/4" pressure treated plywood, cut it to shape, and ran screws into the mush that passed for a deck before.

Another gem is "Hull is in excellent shape" - which means The exterior gelcoat is oxidized but otherwise mostly intact. The interior, however, is probably full of leaves if not fully rooted and growing trees.

Craigslist isn't popular here. Kijiji is what is used here. But the same thing as well. I like the ''boat does not leak''..The rest of it is rotten..lol.

My other favorite is I really need to sell this but I'm too lazy to take the cover off when I take pictures!

I'm not sure what the deal is with this guy. I mean besides asking to much for this boat....

says its only been in the water once, that was the day they found out....

And the guy that owns the boat that doesn't know what its called like "cadoratte bowryder"

Or the person selling the ever elusive "bowelrider"

(I'm guessing someone had the **it scared out of them on that boat....)

[edit: correct typo, thanks tp]

One of my biggest pet peeves is the spelling of trailer. I love it when it's boat, motor and trailor.
