Somewhere, someone is laughing their butts off saying "I can't believe they _really_ thought this would work!" :D

Re: rooster tail

I've never done it but I think your line is too short; and also too thick.
The rope is pulling the can too close to the surface.
Try monofilament line. make it longer too; further from the propwash.
Also consider spacing the anchoring of the line.
I couldn't tell if the can rolled or not from the video. But you need a certain "attitude in the water" for the can to work. I suppose you could get crazy and add fins to achieve this but I thought this sounds like a simple trick that should work on it's own.
Good luck.

Just throwing out another random idea but it seems like you could just hold the can over the side in your hand to figure out the correct pitch the can needed to be at. I think i remember someone saying the holes were supposed to be at 10 O'clock & 2 O'clock It *looks* like yours is 3 and 9... 10 and 2 should in theory make the lower half of the can dig down into the water forcing it up and through the can.

Since you're into experimenting what about a 2-3 inch pvc pipe with a 1" reducer and a 45 degree elbow, seems like that would really pressureize the water haha!

Re: rooster tail

Ok im really bored atm heres a diagram, im sure it would be much heavier than a tin can depending on how you made it, man i need to get out and try it myself haha!

cannon1.jpg

12-24" of 3" Pvc, 3" to 1" pvc reducer 2" of 1" pvc, pvc 45 degree coupling, 6" of 1" pvc

If you make the thing big enough it you should be able to cut it down if need be. Anyone remember building potato cannons? It should funnel the water into the 3" section, compress the crap out of it then send it flying out the 1" end at high pressure.

*Note* Seems like tossing something out the back with boat already at speed would cause a major jerk on the string or whatever was attached to the can/tube. If it did grab and the string wasnt strong enough it could just break off :\

Re: rooster tail

Home depot...too funny.
Don't forget about bending a lip in there as a way to force the can down..

Large amount of water into a smaller space with a small outlet. Works for me. I will try this over the weekend with some "heath robinson " apperatus !!!

Re: rooster tail

It seems to me in the 60's there was a pitot like pick-up unit that you could attach to your transom and make a nice rooster tail. I think it was called a ???-whisle. It looked like 1/2 a fluted tent stake. Ski boats would have them and would make two large tails. Anyone remember? (the 60's we're a little fuzzy for me)

Pondtunes, the weight of your nozzle would make it turn down not up unless you installed it to the botom of the boat, maybe.
Take a look at one of these in a store and see how it's done. rooster tail device

Re: rooster tail

I havent done the can trick in years. but it wasnt that hard. We did make the holes at 10 and 2. If I remember correctly we had to adjust the length of pay out until it sprayed. Keep trying. If the lakes here ever unswell I will try it again.:)

Re: rooster tail

Why would people do that?

I'm only doing it cause someone told me it can be done.

It is only the pride in achievement that makes me want to do it.

Oh.

And rooster tails are COOL! lol

but seriously. It's kinda like a science project. Remember making a volcano with vinegar and baking soda? Or making a bottle suck a boiled egg through the top? It's "at home science".

And the coolness factor. I am sure my 11 year old will like it.

Re: rooster tail

Couldnt you just trim the motor to make a rooster tail? or how do people do it without the can?

That's what started this whole thread, if you read the first post on page one or see below:

Hi all! I've been lurking here for quite a while.Great forum you have here,I've benefitted many times from all your advice and information! I fish the Illinois river,in my 14' Lund..
I just registered so that I can tell you what I saw yesterday. 4 young kids drifting in the middle of the river, very nice boat, big outboard-
I heard a motor screaming and looked over to see what was up.-The motor was up!!!! They had tilted the motor so the prop was barely touching the water,to shoot a rooster tail about 20 feet high! That went on for well over a minute, then they shut it down, laughing and screaming like idiots.
2 or 3 minutes later, they did it again! I had to look away the 2nd time.
It's been quoted here before though: 'so what, daddy will just buy me another motor!"

This is a great design! Fluid Dynamically speaking (I'm a chemical engineer) it should work. However, I'm thinking you would probably need to mount some type of stabilyzer fin on the bottom to keep the unit from rolling.

Re: rooster tail

True, the "can" design uses 2 tow lines not shown on my drawing but intended. They were set at 10 o'clock & 2 o'clock and connected at the farthest points available. I'm sure the intention of the 2 points is to keep it from rolling but without a test on the tube its hard to say how stable it would be with the anchor wire at 10 and 2.
