Re: rooster tail

Please post pictures of this thing in use. I would love to soak the next jet skier jerk the next time he is jumping my wake 20 feet behind the boat.

Re: rooster tail

I would guess that the smaller size can, would make a higher Rooster tail, due to the force the water was being pushed through the smaller hole. If its a larger hole, I would guess it would be more water, at a lower pressure.

This is pretty cool though, I would love to see some pics of this in action.

My wife cracked a tooth so we didn't get out this past weekend. I should be trying it next weekend. I have an assortment of cans to try.

I am heading up North tomorrow.

I PROMISE I will try this out!

Will send pics, videos etc.

Do you think 30lb test line would work?

I've been wanting to try it too. It's been raining so much,I haven't been in the boat for a few weeks. Now the Illinois river is so high theres no way to put a boat in. Closest lake is electric motor only. I hope someone tries this soon! Can't wait to see th pics!

Re: rooster tail

I am terribly disappointed.

I will post pics and vids when my wife finds the cameras.

I tried with 2 different sizes of cans.

I tried 3 different types of attachments.

I tried speeds from 5mph to 30mph.

I could only achieve having the can bounce around in the water. :(

Re: rooster tail

ok. Here is the vids. I am including one test for each can used. please excuse the ugly jerk controlling the cans. We took him up north with us. Although he did provide to be useful in this experiment. Now if only he would do some dishes!

Test can #1 : One 976g can of baked beans. (Empty of course.)

I had highest hopes for this can. Test failed.

Here is the video: Click on it to view it.

test can 2: Can of mushrooms. Empty once again

This can was let out at different distances. The can was ten bent to an oval shape to see if this would provide a different effect. Test failed.

So... I could not provide a result. Any suggestions? I am going back up to Bass Lake in a few weeks and would love to give it a second go.

Re: rooster tail

Let me start by saying I have 0 experience with this....yet lol. I would think though if it started out in the water (to get it kinda filled with water) would keep it from bouncing around, or mabey add a sinker to the front bottom of the can to hold it into the water some? Really these are nothing more than thoughts but in theory this idea should work. I just wish I had time to get out on the water and try myself......even if I fail a bad day on the water is still better than a good day at work ;)

Re: rooster tail

I've never done it but I think your line is too short; and also too thick.
The rope is pulling the can too close to the surface.
Try monofilament line. make it longer too; further from the propwash.
Also consider spacing the anchoring of the line.
I couldn't tell if the can rolled or not from the video. But you need a certain "attitude in the water" for the can to work. I suppose you could get crazy and add fins to achieve this but I thought this sounds like a simple trick that should work on it's own.
Good luck.

Well... good points.

I'll try some 50lb spiderline next time. Also try some different distances. I'll see if I can get it out and behind the propwash. And try starting with it in the water. Though that one scares me due to possible prop entanglment. All in all it was fun to try at least.

I am worried about tangiling in my prop. I try to get it in neutral when stopping so nothing gets tangled but it is a worry.

Going up in 2 weeks for a weekend. I'll try then again. Hopefully with some results. and I am curius about the "attitude" idea in the water. Do you mean I should be going faster? I top out at around 30-33mph at WOT. Engine sounds better at about 28mph. At WOT it sounds like popcorn or something. Something I am still wondering about. Or do you mean I should be creating more wake or riding higher? Just looking for input.

I think I may have way too much time on my hands :)
