Hi all! I've been lurking here for quite a while.Great forum you have here,I've benefitted many times from all your advice and information! I fish the Illinois river,in my 14' Lund..
I just registered so that I can tell you what I saw yesterday. 4 young kids drifting in the middle of the river, very nice boat, big outboard-
I heard a motor screaming and looked over to see what was up.-The motor was up!!!! They had tilted the motor so the prop was barely touching the water,to shoot a rooster tail about 20 feet high! That went on for well over a minute, then they shut it down, laughing and screaming like idiots.
2 or 3 minutes later, they did it again! I had to look away the 2nd time.
It's been quoted here before though: 'so what, daddy will just buy me another motor!"

And the sad thing is they'll probably go on to breed more oxygen-thieves like themselves

Welcome to the forum by the way! :D

We used to cut both ends off of the can, then poke two holes opposite eachother on one end. Attatch with lasing wire. Drag about 4-6 feet behind boat. Once you got going the can would pitch and throw a rooster tail about twenty to fourty feet, depending on boat and HP.:)

And never had one hit the prop or cause any damage.:D

Re: rooster tail

The idea came from kids in NYC. They would open the fire hydrants in the summer. In order to direct the blast of water a open ended funnel (soup can) could direct the flow. It was hard to hang on to the can so rope, string, lacing wire or coat hangers was used. the closer the holes were on and edge the more the can would pitch, throwing water in that direction.

Soup cans, not only a good meal, you can talk to your buddy with a string and make great rooster tails.:)

I'm going to have to try it next time out. Probably next week or two.

Re: rooster tail

I am having problems with the attachment.

Basically take a can with no ends. Put a hole on one side at 10 and 2.

Tie string and drag through pool puddle or lake and watch can pitch and direct water.

Re: rooster tail

You have any idea how many people went out and tied a soup can to thier boats?:D
Im guilty too:redface:

But on a serious note, if this works Im going to keep it in the back of the boat and toss it over the next time one of those *****holes on a jetflea rides my transom.

Re: rooster tail

Where do you attach the can? To the tow loops on the back of the transom?

Maybe I am not someone who should try this... But I will. Only because it's something I've never heard of.

Does Bigger can = Bigger tail? ie... 1/2 gal tomato juice can?
