Roll and tip or spray.

I have a two tone boat, blue and white. The blue has faded and opened up the pores. I am going to paint the blue and I have the option of rolling on or having someone spray.

What is most likely to have the best outcome?

I am thinking of using an interlux product.

Re: Roll and tip or spray.

From what I've read you can roll and tip the Interlux stuff with a nice finish as it flows nicely to cover the brush marks so that's what I will be doing.

If you can get someone to spray for you that knows what they are doing then I'll drive my boat over and he can do that one as well :)

Interlux makes a great product. I have used it roll/ tipped and had great results. There is a technique to it though. It is nothing like applying house paint, but the result isn't either. Interlux says that their paints are specifically designed for roll/ tip application. In my opinion rolling is much easier than spraying given the dangers involved and the equipment needed to spray it.

Anything to get to show it off. All roll/ tipped.

Drewpster, sweet work. Very impressive, I would want to show it off as well. Did you use the two part or the single part paint?

have you made absolute sure that you can't bring the old finish back? it might be worth seeing if you can... if not, I recommend spraying it. If you're handiny, you'de be surprised what you can do in your back yard with a cheap harbor freight gun and decent paint... it's all in the prep aork and not so hard...

Re: Roll and tip or spray.

WCA, I have tried everything I know from beewax to sanding. The pores on the fiberglass are open and I can get it to look good for no longer than a day. This is about a 10 inch strip that goes all away around the boat and makes the whole thing look terrible. It goes to oxidation like look within a day or so even after waxing.

I have a friend of a friend who has the equipment and is willing to work for a favor if I go the spray route, but I know he has no experience painting with interlux. This is a car guy.

The yellow is two part "Perfection" paint from Interlux. This is one part Brightside on the deck.,

Also with a roller and a brush.

I just ordered two quarts of Pettit EasyPoxy topside paint last night & will use the roll & tip method. I know I can control a roller & brush better than a sprayer, also these paints seem to smooth out and loose the brush strokes so I have no fear. Seems that these paints are made for either way you choose to go or know how to do.

Re: Roll and tip or spray.

I rolled my boat with Rustoleum from Home Depot. Use the Foam Rollers (small ones) and just kept going over it and over it to get rid of the "roller lines"

This is three coats of Red on the Splashwell.

I did another boat this way years ago and the paint held up longer than the boat did (bad transom)

Drewpster, do you have a link to your project? Great job on the Roll n Tip, I am going to be doing the same to my boat, it will be going from black to red.

I think the success to the rolling method also lies in the temp and humidity. I was dry and hot when I tried it and the paint dried to quick to work it, so I gave up and sprayed. But there have been some great results with rolling.

lol..yep..was painting my topside bow Sunday...98 degrees and for some reason an aluminum boat baking in the sun gets a little warm..

The Rustoleum was literally cooking as soon as it hit the tin..what a PITA..
But hey..I'll post too!..All rolled and rolled..lol

Wonder if you could wetsand rustoleum that would look like a custom hand rubbed paint job like on a custom car if you took your time polishing it. maybe you could even roll automotive two part part on?

Re: Roll and tip or spray.

I had pretty good results on my hull with Interlux Perfection. I rolled and tipped it over their epoxy primer. IMHO, following the instructions on the paint is very important. There's a couple more things you have to buy to go with the paint. Thinner and something else (I forget). Those could be pretty important to get the bee's wax out of the paint.

Henrye I have considered wet sanding and buffing but honestly with all the lapstrakes and rivets I am thinking it might be a major pain in the arse :D. Yes it can be done but I just have a feeling it would really be a pain . Google rustoleum car paint there is a huuuuuuuuge thread on one of the mopar forums about painting cars with rustoleum and they are wet snding and buffing to a mirror shine ( Hot Rod magazine ) even did a write up on the procedure on an old falcone that came out sharp.

Re: Roll and tip or spray.

Feel free to check out my thread, I used Interlux Perfection for the top color and Interlux VC Performance for the bottom. All rolled and tipped. I didn't sand it and rub it out because of the fear of accidently sanding through the paint on the rivet tops and not being able to get the lapstrake transitions equal to the flat parts.
If I had it to do over again I wouldn't. Besides a factory defective Mariner 100, painting was the lousiest part of the restoration. Next time I'll cough up the bucks and send it out.

Don't get me wrong, when it was all done I was pretty darn proud but it is a nasty job.

Re: Roll and tip or spray.

Here is the thread you spoke of on the mopar board...

http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&page=0&fpart=2&vc=1

I did a few motorcycles this way and a couple of cars they turned out better than spraying and I can paint, well I only really paint airplanes....

here is a link to one of our drag cars that was done with rustoleum black ... I thinned it mineral spirits and it flows to fill in the roller marks and comes out deep.... this drag car has three coats of rustoleum with NO wax buffing or wet sanding.... just the rolled on rustoleum.... this car was silver to begin with so you can see it got good coverage... and two days of cure time.... IT is after all a race car... so damage is only a matter of time...

I started doing the roller painting when I got tired of mixing up small batches in the sprayer to fix patches from wrecks and crinckles in the body work as the race year goes on.... just pop the can open and A little thiner depending on humidity and roll over the damage spot...

hope this helps you guys out....
