Ring18 Project - Complete re-build (Advice needed)

Evening guys,

I have a new project. It needs some minor fiberglass work, but that is more due to damage / chips being taken out of the fiberglass when the boat has been moved between trailers.

The boat has now been stripped of everything, and is just an empty shell, with the first job being to sand and paint it.

I have yet to decide on how the final paint job should look, but would appreciate some advice to help me make up my mind. Sanding the boat, not a problem. I know this will take quite a lot of time to do, but i do not mind spending the time as long as I get it right. I am not too bothered about the cost of the re-paint, as I want it to look the nuts when it is done.

I would like to undertake the painting myself, which brings me on to some questions about painting... As I have never repainted a bota before, I would love to hear from people who have done, to give me some advice about what type of paints to use, what undercoats I may require, and any sealents etc. It is best to re-paint using a spraying machine, or to do it using brushes?

Also, I have yet to decide what size engines, and what type of engine to look at putting onto the boat. I would love to know what people who are more knowledgable about these things suggest. I have read some people have used up to a 250hp engine on this model boat, but that does sound a bit too large for me. I have a budget of about ?1500 for an engine.

The interiour, I am going to completly re-design. I am going to work the entire interiour from black leather. I am also making my own mini fridge/cooler, as well as a nice sound system.

I do not have any images yet of the project, however I do plan to take some shortly when I have some time to spend outside and working on it.

I would love to hear some suggestions about potential paint work etc, as at the moment it is a blank canvas, and I want to talk the mrs out of stenciling a bloody dolphin on the front :)

All the best

Noodle

Hey,

Cheers :)

Thanks for the information. I like the finish to your paintwork... shiney! :D

Did you use a spraying machine, or brush etc?

If you wouldn't mind, what process did you go through during your repaint?

LOL Noodle the sheer fact you got SWMBO out there actually sanding is impressive :D. The most my better half has done thus far was helping me tape it off for the stripes and even then she was only running the paper out while I taped it down.

I think I have pritty much decided to go with the perfection 2 part paint, so all should be good :)

haha, she's quite keen to get it finished for the summer so we can play boats! After some time getting the hang of the sander, she actually did very well. However, she is not getting it painted pink, or a dolphin on the front as she leeps saying !

OH MY GOD! how much bloody sanding!!!

Still sanding, its getting depressing now its taking so long, however, by taking my time I hope to get the best results!

Most of the paint is now off, with the exception of the front right side, which is a job for another day as I got fedup of the sander today. My nephew also went ninja with sandpaper to get into all the akward places, he did a very good job, so happy there also.

Once the paint is all off, I am onto Fiberglass repairs. I will take some photo's once saning is finished, and detail all of the bits that need doing repair wise. I am just researching the best way to fix all the little cracks and bits right now that I have found under the paint. there are no major damaged areas I can see, but I do know there are a couple bits that I want to change myself.

I also found my boats serial number. Does anybody know if there is anywhere you can look up serial numbers to get info?

Also, where I have sanded the paint back, you can make out faintly the style that the boat was painted when it was new, and also its name. It had two stripes running along the sides, then they tilted upwards towards the back, and into a rectangle which had a name in it. The name says "Landcraft". it has this on both sides of the boat.

Now, would this be the name of the boat, or a brand/model do you think?

It seems an odd name if it is a name

I am a month into sanding right now, I don't get that much free time so its just grabbing an odd hour when i can, so i think its helping break it up a bit. I need to flip the boat over soon so i can work on the bottom of the boat, and also do some repairs. Thats going to be interesting. Saning the bottom wont take long tho, as from what I can see about 2/3 of it is already missing paint

Re: Ring18 Project - Complete re-build (Advice needed)

oh, I have a question whilst I think about it...

Fuel tanks.... I am going to fit at least two fuel tanks to the back of the boat, one in the back left, one in the back right. 2x 22l tanks.

Now, I was also considering fitting another larger fuel tank to the front of the boat, right along the central line, but right into the nose of the boat, and then building 2 footwells around it for the people in the seats.

I was considering a 103L tank, such as this:
http://www.imsupplies.co.uk/product.php?productid=970

Now, doing this gives me two pressing questions. The first is, will this add too much weight to the front of the boat, and cause me any problems?

The second question is, would this cause any issues being at the front, such as the length of fuel lines etc, and would it be possible to either install a Y splitter between the two tanks in the rear, and some form of "main tank/ Reserve tanks" switch so i can flick between fuel tanks easily.

Cheers

I would either stick to the two smaller tanks aft, or get one larger one aft.

The idea of a fuel tank in the front of the boat with two tanks and the motor in the back seems awkward. Distributing the weight and running lines gets complicated.

Are you sanding down to the glass?

Hiya,

Cheers for the reply. This is where I am looking to learn from other people about would it really be a good idea to put it nearer the front, or more central etc. Running lines etc wouldn't be a problem, but I am more concerned if it will have much of an impact on performance, or cause handling issues.

Sanding back to the Gelcoat at the moment. The gelcoat is then gonna get primed, and painted. But yea, a proper sanding down. Some video's I have seen show people only lightly sanding the paintwork, and then painting over it. I have gone for the remove every speck of paint visible, and start from scratch :)

Re: Ring18 Project - Complete re-build (Advice needed)

hey guys.

Images added above!

As you can see, the sanding is going well, but still plenty to do.

The last couple pics show some repair work that needs to be done. The boat has been scraped onto the trailer by a previous owner, which has caused some damage. Its more scraped off than anything else.

What would be the easiest way to repair this?

Cheers
