Re: Right or wrong?

Coors, if the valvetrain is intact then the exhaust valve will be open on the non-compression stroke, very little chance of confusing them in my opinion, no compression can build at all with a valve open.

The piston is coming up, and air is trying to get out anywhere it can. It's not as strong as the compression stroke, but I have seen novices fooled by it.

Re: Right or wrong?

Update: It fired right up. It purred like a kitten until it ran out of gas.(the carb was empty) so I just primed the carb with the throttle and it fired right up again. It ran for a good 15 minutes without a problem.

Thank you everyone for all your help. I will spend the rest of the week putting new gages in and making the wiring nice and pretty then I planned on getting an inspection from the coast guard auxillary. We are moving next month. So I won't have a lot of time but hopefully I can get all the teak sanded and everything done before the kids get out of school in june.

Everyone on this forum has been awesome and the amount of help was overwhelming. I plan on comming back here with I rebuild the engine and stern drive but for now I want to go boating.

Thanks again

You don't need a gauge, stick your thumb (or finger) over the plug hole and crank the engine. Trust me, you will feel the difference.
You can find usable compression testers everywhere. Any auto parts store or online at any tool store. If that isn't good enough, do a google search for compression tester.
All you are trying to find is TDC on the compression stroke. You don't need to go buy anything. No matter what some beer tells you.

Was that supposed to be a snide remark?
