I have a Evinrude Speed Twin Mod # 28402M, Ser # E04759 28 H.P. @ 4500 R.P.M. I just got this motor from a friend. The only history I know about it is it set in storage for 3-4 years on a pontoon. The worst part is it set in a small lake in Indiana last summer and all winter with the lower unit in the water. The motor was never started or turned over while in the lake. I need to know what year this motor is so I can get a manual for it so I can hopfully get it running. Took the cover off the motor and everything looks good and clean.Have not checked lower unit oil yet just got it this morning. Thanks for any help or info.

Re: Evinrude Speed Twin info

Hey there Rodge - <br />Evinrude Model 28402<br />Year 1964 <br />HP 28<br />Displacement 35.7CID<br />Spark plugs: Champion J4C gapped at .030"<br />Fuel/Oil ratio: 50:1 87 octane gas to TCW-3 rated outboard oil.<br />Gearcase oil: SAE 90W outboard gearcase oil only. Walmart, etc, has this.<br /><br />Those engines have no thermostat, so a decarb often helps them out a lot. Have a look in the FAQ forum for more information on doing that. My project engine for the last few years has been the Johnson variety of your Evinrude. So if you have *any* questions at all about it, please feel free to ask.<br />These are basically the same block as the 1955 and previous 25hp OMC engines, with many parts from the 40hp engines they were making at the time. So they are much beefier (and portlier) than the later 25hp 22.0CID engines.<br /><br />I have this exact manual, in addition to the Seloc ones that Iboats sells. It's better:<br />OEM Service manual cheap, click here.<br />You'll want to replace the impeller - unless you know for a fact it's no more than 2 years old. A new one is pretty cheap. When it starts, you should see water gush out the large hole in the back of the leg after a couple seconds.

Thanks Paul. Are these motors anygood and worth fixing up. I plan on fixing it up and later put on a pontoon. Also are parts hard to find. The outside appearance of this one looks good and clean.

Re: Evinrude Speed Twin info

If you want an unbiased opionion on whether or not these are worth fixing up, you're talking to the wrong guy.<br />Mine spend a few days underwater in salt, and was improperly stored and never started again for 20 years. It was the definition of an outboard 'Not worth fixing'. <br />However, parts are easy to find since they share parts with the ever popular Big Twins (25hp and 30hp 35.7CID, 35hp and 33hp 40.5 CID, and 40hp 43.9CID engines from the 50s though the 70s). Many commonly replaced parts are still in production. NOS parts are relitively easy to find as well. <br />I would think that this would be a good pontoon boat engine, since it's torquey for it's HP, it has a bulletproof lower unit, and that it being on a pontoon offsets it's bad features. Namely its size, weight, and inefficent lower unit shape.<br />Does your one have an electric starter? If not, try pulling the rope a few times. This engine does not have compression relief.

Re: Evinrude Speed Twin info

Just an update on this motor. After Paul's responce and getting a copy of the original manual I got started on this thing. At first spark only to one cylinder. I again got back with Paul and after several e-mails back and forth I got it running and put a new impeller in it also had to fix the lower unit houseing where it had froze and busted some time ago. It has been winterized and put to bed for the winter and I get it back out next summer and probably rebuild the carb and decarb it and give it a new shine. A big thanks to Paul Moir for helping me so much with this thing and also thanks to iboats for having such a great site.

Re: Evinrude Speed Twin info

Your welcome rodge! :) <br /><br />One of the tricky things about these old Speed Twins ('62 - '64) and their Johnson RX-10 - RX-12 cousins is that there appears to never have been a schematic published for them. Rodge needed this for some work on his engine, and betweeen the two of us we were able to come up with one.<br /><br />So here it is for whoever wants it. Please feel free to copy it or use it for whatever you want.<br /><br /> 28hp Schematic, click here.<br /><br />As far as I understand it, this doesn't violate any sort of copywright law. But if the mods feel otherwise, please remove it.

Re: Evinrude Speed Twin info

I just purchased this exact same engine (actually two of them). One was supposed to have been working when it was put away, the other one died while in use. I need to get it up and running and was hoping that the schematic that was created was still available somewhere (the link no longer works).

Any ideas on where I can download that PDF?

Thanks

It was almost 6 years ago. Anything could have happened to the link by now! But I have the pdf parts manual for it if you want it. PM me with your request.

Here is a good place to get your parts schematics.

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php

Just click on the year of your motor. Those old 28's are excellent engines. I just sold one of them on a boat, this week. When I got mine, it wasn't pumping any water. I dropped the lower unit and found the water tube completely missed the impeller housing, when it was put back together. It ran great, when it left my place.

Fix it up and you'll have a dependable motor.

I have a 62 speeditwin, and honestly, you don't need a schematic for the electrical, its pretty basic. Circuit for starting, circuit for choke, heck I think it charges the battery too, but I forget. I have the motor off now, changing out coils, but I have the wiring schematic on the control box cover, I might be able to get a picture and post it, if you really need it.

Re: Evinrude Speed Twin info

If you have a picture then I will take it. The engine is in pretty rough shape, so I'll have my work cut out for me.
