I have a 03 mercury 90 hp 2 stroke engine and it goes to max rpm after start. I was out on the water eariler this week and the boat was going good, I slowed it down and as i was slowing it down and about to put it into neutral I felt a small kick and all the sudden the engine revved to max rpm with out me going anywhere. I put the boat in neutral and the engine was still at max rpm's. Finally I pressed the emergency kill switch to stop the motor. When I arrived home i found that the prop became disengaged from the drive shaft. I fixed that problem but the motor still goes to 6000+ rpm in neutral. Can anyone help me because I really dont want to hear that terrifying 2 cycle engine at max rpm's.

Sounds like a control box problem, Mercury did have some bad boxs a number of years ago, it could also be a broken throttle cable--Bob

Throttle linkage is busted somewhere... Check at the port bottom side of the engine and at the throttle arm control...
